I have to remove the steering wheel on my '99 Grand Am and I was wondering if there is anything I should watch out for. I've removed steering wheels in other vehicles, but never on a vehicle with an airbag. Is there anything special I have to do. Does the steering wheel cover just pull off? Should I disconnect the battery or any fuses before I start?

Thanks!

If you need to remove the steering wheel, you need to be extremely careful with the airbags. The system needs to be disabled prior to beginning any work. Just removing the battery cables may not fully disable the system. If I were you I would take it to a mechanic who can properly disable it for you. To remove the cover you will need to unbolt the cover from the steering wheel. They are usually located on the back of the wheel.

If you get a shop repair manual, it should have removal procedures listed, as well as comprehensive airbag disarming instructions.
And yes, be VERY CAREFUL; the airbag is extremely sensitive and could go off even when removed.
