1997 Grand Am Gt. Wont go into gear ginabehny 01-02-2006, 10:47 AM
My grand am gt. will start but will not go into gear. the ignition switch has been changed. This is not the one that is where the key goes. It is on the opposite side of the key. I have been told it is the neutral safety switch. But I also thought, that the purpose of that was so you could not start it in gear? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated so that I can get rid of this nightmare. I fix one thing and 5 more things break with this car. xeroinfinity 01-02-2006, 11:18 AM ginabehny i think its a safty switch but for the clutch, it has to be depressed to start. I gear or not, and welcome to AF. GTP Dad 01-02-2006, 11:32 AM Does your gearshift move or is it locked? Do you have a floor shift or column? If you have a floor shift then there is a possibility that the solenoid that locks the gearshift is not releasing. This will release when you push the brake. If this is not releasing there should be a manual button beside the shifter or somewhere on the console that will allow you to release it. As for the one on the column, I don't know where it is. If the gearshift moves then it is a linkage issue that is causing the problem, probably the shift cable is rusted or broken. no2dog 04-13-2006, 12:50 PM There is a fuse in the engine compartment, 20 amp one, that works the solenoid so you can shift when you apply the brake. Check to see if that is blown or not. Related Links Enter the largest automotive community on the planet! |
