Need a little more info.

Could be a rear drum issue, loose shock, axle, whisky bottles, spare tire, dead body, you get the picture.........

Hey..sorry...ya just reread that. Don't know what I was thinking!

When breaking, I have a thumping coming from the ass end. Under light break, it is not there, but when coming to a stop, there is several loud ones. I've climbed under, and really can't see what it is. The breaks were replaced about 15,000kms ago (not sure what that is in miles..probably around 8000). I was planning to jack it up and check everything out, but I figured I"d try here first.

Thanks in advance.....
Rick

Start with the basics, pull the rear tires and inspect the drum surface for hot/hard spots, cracks etc. Make sure there doesn't look like anything is wet, shiny, broken etc.

Then look to see that the exhaust isnt banging around from a bad hangar. Whack the tailpipe around with the side of your fist and watch for contact.

Does it do it with the park brake applied?

Check for broken shock mounts, bad bushings etc. Look at the springs and mounts to see if you can see and rust colored dust/powder. Movement of metal parts can leave this type of trail.

Do you have a rear sway bar? Check the mounts and connecting points for movement.

Swap the front and rear tires to check for a tire with a bad ply.

Is the spare tire mounted tightly and correctly?

Still haven't gotten under it yet...been busy working..but I'll answer some of these:

Checked exhaust....wasn't it!
Park break works fine, but no way to tell if it's knocking with it applied!
Shocks were replaced about 10,000kms ago, but not sure about the mounts.
Springs have been bad for some time, need to be done!
I looked at all axils, barrings ect. didn't see anything!
Tire rotation my be the next step.
No spare tire mount...it's in the back!

Thanks for you help!!

Is the thumping rythmic and changing with vehicle speed (slowing as the cars slows)? Is it louder under hard breaking? Does it continue until you reach full stop?

Is it somewhat erratic, no real rythm.

Does to sounds like someone tapping under the body with a hammer? or does it sound more like 2 pipes or plates banging.
