oil pressure sensor leaking?

We just replaced my brothers oil pan (had a crack), after we started it up and had it running for awhile there was a basket ball size puddle of new oil on the driveway. We traced it back to the oil pressure sensor, when the car was running it was "pouring" out of the sensor. We replaced the sensor and there was no change. A friend suggested that there could be to much oil pressure caused by a bad oil filter, after we changed the filter the leak is now a couple of drops here and there to nothing at all. My question is could this be caused from having to much oil in the engine/bad oil filter or has anyone seen this problem caused by anything else? The car is a 99 neon w/dohc. Thanks Woody
