1991 corolla, performed tune-up, now lacks power gulmon 12-31-2005, 11:10 PM
Anyone have any leads on my corolla issue. I followed the manual's directions (chilton's) on setting the idle and adjusting the timing. I jumpered the engine check terminals, set in neutral, all electrical turned off, operating temp, set engine to 800 rpm. Checked timing, set to 10 deg BTD. changed spark plugs and went for a test drive. Lack power and when I step on the accelerator and hesitates and sputters a little. Does similar sputter when I rev it in park. veedubmechanic 01-01-2006, 03:48 PM you problably didnt set timing correctly. you sure you set timing correctly on the #1 spark plug wire? you problably retarted the timing to much. bcopeland 01-01-2006, 08:24 PM Also, is the exhaust manifold cracked? gulmon 01-01-2006, 10:50 PM I am adjusting from the #1 cylinder. I did not notice any leak from exhaust manifold (should be obvious, right?). The symtoms occured once I performed the tune up. I also installed performance spark plugs (2 electrodes). No check engine light is on. I bought the car 1 month ago. Any suggestions on sequence of testing, trouble shooting? Diblue 01-26-2006, 02:35 AM maybe an issue with the spark plugs that were used? I know in my mom's car (not toyota) I put in the wrong brand of spark plugs, and the car ran like total crap, no power, barely running. corning_d3 01-26-2006, 02:56 AM Are they Bosch +2 plugs? A lot of engines don't like these... AND..you didn't gap them, did you? diesel1962 01-27-2006, 06:59 PM Hello. What evere sparkplug that was in the engine when it rolled out of the factory should be replaced whith the same spark plug.Thats what I do with my cars.
