z71 is just a sport addition. Like the z24 cavlier, and z28 camaro. It just has upgrades on it.

It used to just stand for the suspesion package you have. Like the Z60 on the SS or the Z66 "premium on road suspension, you see this on a lot of 2wd Avalanches". Now Z71 still means off road suspension, skid plates. but now also means standard 5.3L, heavy duty jounce bumpers. nicer interior package and so on.

It's the designated RPO number assigned to identify the package ordered. GM identifies all equipment installed on their vehicles with a RPO number. Service manuals contain the entire listing and what they represent.
