1993 Camry---Once in a while the light will go out, but for the most part it stays on. At times it will go out when you excellerate, but then comes back on. The emergency brake is released and the power brake fluid is up.

Have you checked your brake switch?

I'm beginning to think this is a common problem. This is the third thread about this - one by me, one not. No solutions (that work) suggested yet.

semyonlibman, which brake switch?

I've looked at mine and can't see any way to clean it. It also won't be easy to check, since the brake light isn't on all the time.

I've just thought of the way how to check it.

Remove the connector.
Step 1. Try to short the contacts. If the brake lite comes on than the wiring is OK.
Step 2. Check the resistance of the sensor itself. I do not know if the contacts are normaly closed or normaly opened. If it is not the infinity or 0 ohms - something is wrong with the sensor.

Since brake fluid is hygroscopic, I wonder if it is possible for the fluid in the MC to absorb enough moisture over time to trigger the sensor.
Has anyone with the problem tried to replace the fluid in the MC with fresh?

Hmm. Replace the fluid in the MC. That's a thought.
(by the way, I did try disconnecting the sensor, and the light went off and stayed off.)

I have a hunch that replacing the sensor involves replacing the MC reservoir. Anyone done that? Does it just pull off the MC?

I just looked at my wife's '93. Looking at the MC from the front/left, there appears to be a recessed locking tab that would be accessed with a flat tipped screwdriver. At that point it would seem that it would pull out.
You might try emailing www.rockauto.com. They have always been helpful to me in locating hard to find parts for my Crapillac.

saadbaigpk, we are not taliking about the light that tells you when a bulb is out. Its the one that says either the brake fluid is low or the parking brake is on.

Thank you all for your replies. Had another suggestion to check the brake pads. They were VERY THIN!!! Put new pads on and the light went off. Maybe the light also warns when brake shoes are warn out.

Had a similar occurence on my 91. the brake indicator light on the instrument panel would blink randomly on and off, finally traced it back to the switch at the parking brake lever; if you held the lever down hard you could make the light go off. Took the console apart and found the bracket for the switch bent so the switch could not be fully depressed. Tweaked the bracket back into position allowing the switch to be fully depressed when the parking brake was released and have not had the problem since.
