Replacing EGR Valve

I just replaced my EGR valve in my Buick Park Avenue (1997).

The check engine light is still illuminated, does anyone know how to clear the light? Or will it clear on its own?

Disconnect your battery for a few minutes and then reconnect it.

Thanks for the advice... I had the negative terminal disconnected while I was swapping out the valve; so I think that I've got that covered. Maybe I've got to drive it around a bit? Or perhaps the alarm needs to be manually cleared from history with a snap-on scanner?

You need to clear it with a scanner.
Or drive it threw so many drive cycles and it will clear itself iif the problem is fixed.

Thanks for the replies all.
I guess that I will drive it around and see what happens. If it still hasn't cleared, the next time I take it to my mechanic, I'll have him clear the alert.

The new valve made a world of difference when I was driving it to work this morning. I had thought that the rough ride between 60 and 70 mph was caused by imbalanced wheels or something. This morning, most of the vibrations had gone away, so I am keeping my fingers crossed; the smoother ride was an unexpected bonus!

Just curious, how many miles does your PA have? Mine's got roughly 144,000k and I don't think the EGR has ever been changed! I know the saying "If it's not broke, don't fix it" but I'm debating now after reading your forum

My PA has about 104000 mi (167000 km)...

My check engine light came on during my last drive up to Toronto from Long Island. I was very concerned about this since the last time my check engine light came on, within 60 seconds after the light illuminating, my car stalled and would not start (Ultimately, the problem was caused by a ruptured intake manifold gasket which led to hydro lock ~ coolant in the cylinders).
