I have a Whistler SRT-35R...I got it for christmas...

Does this thing work good? Would you recommend it or another? I have it mounted on my windshield a little high. Where would you recommend placing it?

i have always heard. don't know if it is true, to stick them on your window as hight as you can so the lazer can read farther. Don't know if it is true tho. Make shure it can read far because the one i had by time it beeped it was to late to slow down. And you have to remember they only read if a cop is hitting you with the gun, or if he has the trigger held. Some people think it will just pick up a cop car alone. It don't.

The good radar detectors will pick up if cars in front of you are being hit too in some cases. I have had good luck with whistler but haven't had a radar detector in a long time so Im not sure of the model numbers anymore. If it is higher up than the bottom dollar one, then it is probably a fairly decent one as far as whistlers go.

kahuna, ur names hawaiian..do you live in hawaii? if so, just remember most cops dont laser people..they sort of just pull them over for "reckless driving" unless its a trap..but if it is a trap they only have a bunch of places they do it at... just dont speed at those places :-D

Just relaying what I've heard about laser speed detection. Cops need a flat, reflective surface to get the beam (on laser) to bounce back to the gun, that is why most states have issued a reflective front plate. I don't run my bird w/ a front plate (only cuz I think the bracket is unsightly, and carries a $135 fine in the state of CT) I've been hit but never pulled over, I think because birds have no flat refective surfaces in front.

Laser and radar both need a hard surface to reflect off of, and it doesn't need to be flat but it does give a better return. As for radar detectors, with laser and instant on radar make sure you watch traffic. If you are the only car on the road and there is a cop playing with radar or laser you are pretty much caught.

The Whistler should do the job nicely as long as it covers the ka and laser bands, which I believe all the Whistlers do.

The best placement for a radar detector is below your rear view mirror. The reason is because it can see everything you can. If you put it on the dash it may not see 360 degrees there's allot blocking it, but it should still get a good view of forward.

Well placed the detector can see police (while their beacon is on), as well as ambulances warning areas with construction or safety zones, etc. at an impressive distance. Most of the times I know they're on the way before they are even visible, but when placed low to the dash it doesn't pick them up.

Radar takes a great many variables. If you've seen the Myth Busters episode where they continually tried to trick the light they failed, so don't think that because you own a black car or have a non-reflective surface that you have any chance against radar. Trust me, just give up trying to beat it.

Remember that no matter how good your detector is it takes one beep on the laser band and it's all over but the ticket. So in reality, no detector is flawless, so just drive safely and you really don't have to worry at all.
