You sure the cable isn't damaged? Get under the truck (make sure the e-brake is on) and have someone shift the lever and make sure the shifter bracket on the detent rod is moving. That said, if it is, you're pretty much hosed at this point..(Oh and check your trans fluid level)

You may have a shift interlock problem. Basically shift interlock is a safety feature that will not allow the selector to be moved from park with the key on unless the brake pedal is depressed. Try this, turn the key to the run position, turn the key back just a little , the selector should come out of park unless there's another problem. Good luck!

do you have a dead or dying battery?

what is the voltage?

have you ever replaced your ignition switch?

Is the problem that the shifter won't move out of park or the transmission won't shift out of park? Those are two completely different problems.

If the gear selector moves, but the transmission doesn't respond..... follow the advice given by rlith.

If the gear selector doesn't move from the park postition. Check for a blown fuse, because it's probably a problem with the interlock. If you listen carefully, you should be able to hear an audible "click" in the column when the brake is pressed.

I would have to agree with Scottman. Some cars have an interlock over ride button, not familiar with your vehicles in the states. Sadly they are too costly in my part of the world to both purchase and operate. You think petrol costs alot in the states. If you work out currency conversion we pay about $7.70 a gallon.
