Whats a gutted airbox?

I hear people sometimes talk about how they have a gutted airbox in there RIV....what is a gutted airbox?

"Gutted air box", means that the inside of the air filter housing is cut out, eliminating the air restricting baffles and any other obstruction. Usually it is also a good idea to use a K&N air filter. Less restriction = more air! The next step would be the CAI (cold air intake) system, consisting of a new air inlet pipe with a K&N filter mounted near the front headlight. Look on Ebay for some examples.

ok Thanks Bro,im getting a K&N filter tomarrow for my 1996 buick riveria s/c......so do u mean I have to gut my air filter for more air flow?.....I think I am maybe misunderstanding. please tell me what to do thanks :)

not the filter itself. when you put the new filter in look at the inside of the airbox. it has all kinds of walls and other blockages in order to make the car quiet.

also, remove any resonators and pipes attatched to the airbox that muffle the sound. if you really want to get wild cut out either the top or bottom of your airbox, depending on where the intake pipe draws air from, to allow more air flow.

ok so how would I do that on a 1996 buick riv? and if I cut the air box for horse power is that allegal?
