What causes uneven brake pad wear?

Hey folks

just changed my pads and rotors (front's) last night on my 91 regal. Good thing too as I was down to metal on metal on the driver's side but the passenger's side still had about a quarter inch of wear left.

What causes the pads to wear unevenly like this? The rotors were pretty rusted - the outer edge to about 1/2 inch in were really rusty...

I didn't notice any pulling to one side either.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Usually you have a caliper slide pin binding or needing lubrication. The caliper needs to "float" when not engaged. The second most common cause would be a caliper that is not releasing, and third, a brake hose has collapsed from the inside allowing pressure to remain on the caliper after releasing the brakes. Be sure the first two are OK, and then check the brake line.
