if anyone has any ideas would be gratefull.i have a 96 toyota camry with the 4cyl with a distributer.i recently put a engine in it and now the engine light is on the code is the cam sensor 03400 on the snap on scanner.but this vehicle does not have a cam sensor now i cannot go through emmissions due to engine light.i called the dealer and asked about a cam sensor for this and they said it does not have one just like the manual.i looked it over again to make sure i did not miss anything and everything is plugged in.as soon as i clear the code it comes back i dont know what could cause the code of a cam sensor on a car that does not have one.i am hoping someone that has had this problem before can help i really need tabs.thanks

Your engine does have a camshaft position sensor (G signal). It is located in the distributor and has one tooth on the signal plate and a pick-up coil. The signal plate rotates with the cam.

The DTC P0340 means there is an open or short in the camshaft position sensor circuit - bad connection or pinched/burned wire most likely. Another possibility is a bad sensor.

Check the connection to the distributor.

Get a distributor from a salvage yard and see if that solves the problem (may need a new cap and rotor).

hey brian thanks for the quick reply do you think it is in the distributer all the wires to it are in good shape.and if it is in the dist could i repair or better to replace.and the dist signal would set a cam sensor code on this cause the toyota dealer was lost even had me speak to there lead tech who said only dis cars will set a cam sensor code i was thinking dist due to hall effects the only thing that i know that acts like a cam sensor.but i figured it would have runability problems if it was the dist.but it runs perfect

hey brian thanks for the info it was a pinched wire inside the wire loom took care of the cam sensor.but i went to go through emmissions after clearing codes and test drive as soon as i pulled in to the em place the light came on so i went home put it on the scanner now it is a 0400 code i believe wrote it down somwere but is is saying insuffiecient egr vacum so i checked all vacum lines visual look good did not hear any leaks (wish i had a smoke tester) tested egr valve holds vacum no drop and checked vac lines routing with sticker looks good.i am soory to bug you again but since you were helpfull and dead on with diagnostics before i figure i cant go wrong asking you. i really appreciate this and if i had a real manual would be easier the page you showed for my camsensor i have not seen that in any of mine.so you must have a good manual.thanks again any ideas gratefull THANK YOU VERY MUCH SHAWN
