Hey all,

New here with a very curious sound that just started tonight. It sounds like it a suspention squeek but increases with speed. it powers up the drive band ok but im afraid it might be the u joints or even the tranny, but its a sound Ive yet to hear in my years taking care of my cars. any idea's?

Thanks...

Rush

Its probably just the U-joints. Does your drive shaft have the u shaped bracket in the middle holding it to the frame? If so, thats probably where its coming from.

Will have to check.. Ive driven it several time since it started. It comes and goes but what i did notice the it wont squeel in reverse. Im wondering if its not my parking brake shoes. that with the brake not working from the dash point. Will let you know what i find out once I get it under cover and check it out.. still raining here in Washington.

That could be. When it gets dry enough get under the driver's side and check the parking brake cable. Mine was so loose at one point that not only did the brake not work, it was rattling against the frame. If it is the brakes, it should change when the brakes are applied (provided they are working at all) it may be that a piece of hardware (retainer clip or spring) has come loose.

I ggree with the previous posters. It sounds like U-joints. Does it make the sound in reverse also?

My experience has been that worn U-Joints will also clunk loudly when shifting from neutral to drive, or reverse to drive, or park to reverse, etc. If they've been there for a long time it wouldn't hurt to replace them.

If you have a carrier bearing (with two or more driveshafts it is used to hold them) throw some WD-40 on it and see if that quiets it down. This happened to me on a pickup I used to have (carrier bearing was new) and it never squeaked again.
