Poll: Mechanical or electric fans?

When I purchased my '95 Roadmaster, I noticed it had electric fans to cool the radiator. A friend of mine bought a '96 at the same time, and his has a mechanical fan. Upon further research, I noticed that some have the electric type of fan, while others have the mechanical. Was this an option? And which type do you have on your Roadmaster?

That's very interesting! I thought mechanically belt driven fans were doomed after the 80s.
This is just a thought...but could your friend possibly have the detuned corvette engine? I know Special Edition Roadmasters had that engine as an option in 96' (not sure about 95') and that could explain the belt driven fan...different engine and all

Before I bought my Roadmaster, I did a lot of research online to see what people thought of the car, it's specs, any problems associated with it, etc, and from what I've read on a number of occasions, the "detuned" LT1 corvette engine was available from '94 to '96. Another interesting thing I found on eBay was this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8018169018&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT You could use this theoretically to convert a electric fan cooled radiator to a belt driven one. That would be quite a bit of work and modification knowing which wires to cut and what relays to disconnect, but for someone who wanted a belt driven fan to cool their radiator, it would be worth it. Also, from what I read about the '96 Special Editions is that GM really didn't do much to make the car "special" for collection purposes. They primarily changed the hood ornament and a few minor details, and ALL the cars made for that model year were labeled "Special Edition". That wasn't really enough to give the car a decent sendoff into history.

All of the LT-1's were just standard LT-1's, the same as all of the 94-96 RMW's, RM's, Caprice's and Impala SS's. Most guys throw the mech. fan in the trash because it's been proven to rob at least 10hp. Just add the second electric fan. You can get ell of the parts used or brand new for cheap from Dal.

A mechanical fan in the late models (94-96) is a sign that the vehicle has the factory towing package which explains the loss of some hp.
