I was thinkin about doin an engine swap when my 3L finally goes. I wanted to know what everyone thought about putting a I6 Supra engine in a 4runner...would it work, and how many mods. would be involved. Or anyother recommended swaps...any info, appreciated.

I think you could make it work but an I6 is a long engine. I've also got a 90 4Runner and when my 3.0 goes to poo I plan on puttin in a SB V8 in it. But either way you go it's a good idea the 3.slow is a weak engine for the weight of the 2nd gen 4Runners 150+/- horses and 185+/- torque isn't enough for a 4x4 in my opinion. And thats my $.02

In most of the rest of the world 4runners use inline 6 cylinder Diesels. I believe they are called the "Surf" and not the 4runner in Japan, etc. They also make a 5cylinder diesel that a friend of mine swapped into his truck in place of a 22R. I don't think the Supra engine would be a good match for the 4runner or a 4x4. You need low end power in a large vehicle. The Supra motor has a cam and head that is designed for midrange and top end power. You wouldn't be playing to the motors strengths by putting it in a truck.

A 3.4 L 5VZ-FE would also be a good swap candidate. If you want HP, you can always stick on a supercharger. No problem with getting parts like you might have with a Surf engine.
