my wife came home one day and said it sounded like she had a small toy airplane in her engine compartment,i laughed but when i drove the car down the road at about 4o mph and up you can hear a destinctive humming noise coming through the inside of the car, very annoying.if you role the window down an drive you can't hear it.as the car gets faster the plane cranks up it's engine and gets louder to a certain level.it's not in the motor.if you put the car in ''n'' and coast the plane starts to wind down, rev the motor in this process and no change in noise.it actually sounds like its' coming from the trans. some way.boots on the cv's are in good shape, the car has 90000 mi on it. just a standard 3.8 bonneville.this just happened over night. she drove it home 1 evening no problems got up the next morning to take child to school and the plane fired its' engines up.any advice?

It sounds like a torque converter to me. They will make a noise similar to what you describe when the vanes inside break.

Hi wjr, I have a 2000 SLE . The symptoms sound similiar to mine. It was the wheel bearing (95,000 miles). Although the sound did not start over night. It got gradually louder and more noticable as time passed.Just a thought, good luck!

I had the exact problem, it was the left front wheel bearing, they replace the entire assembly, not just a wheel bearing.

Ditto on the front wheel bearing hub. Had to replace it at 67,000 miles
