Does this sound like a dying fuel pump?

Hello. I have a '00 300M with 98,000 miles. This car gets excellent, regular service, recently had transmission fluid changed, and fuel rail flushed, along with new spark plugs. Timing belt was replaced about 10,000 miles ago. It gets driven about 80 miles/day M-F, all straight highway. I am the second owner (picked it up with about 40,000 miles on it), and with exception of regular service, have had no problems with it. In fact, knock on wood, it is the best car I have ever owned. It runs great, doesn't have a hint of a knock or a stutter, no transmission problems (big knock on wood...), and gets excellent fuel economy.

About two months ago (still warm weather, if this matters), the car started to get a very rough start. Specifically, you would turn the ignition and the engine wouldn't crank -- it would just immediately "jump" to life. Again, this was only on starting, and once it started, it idled perfectly and ran great. I had it serviced, and that is when they changed the plugs/flushed the fuel rail, etc. Computer diagnostics (or what they performed) all checked out. Still, the problem remained. Now, from a cold start, the car really cranks for about three or four seconds before it finally kicks over. Again, once it starts, absolutely no problem and I have had no problem in acceleration or notice anything unusual. I have noticed, though, that if I turn the car immediatley off (after this slow cranking start), and the immediately start it again, it starts normally. In fact, I can let it "sit" for about ten minutes and still start it again normally. Anything after that, and the "cranking" start occurs.

Again, once it starts, it runs greats. No check engine light, or any other noticeable problems. The dealer is now telling me it sounds like a fuel pump, but...wouldn't I see some other problems (loss of power, hestiation in acceleration?) if the pump were really going bad, or can these things die a very slow death? As much as I love the car, I am leery of spending alot of money on it, given the miles. Then again, the thing runs as good as it did they day I got it, with the exception of the weird ignition.

Thanks very much!

yeah, that's usually the symptoms of a failing fuel pump, it starts to loose its pressure and weaken over time. It may start fine now, but once it gets going after a while, it looses its prime and just gets weak.

Thanks for the reply. I'm taking it it for service this week, and am expecting them to tell me the FP needs replaced.

You take your car to the shop and have diagnostics run on a computer to tell them exactly what is wrong with your car. A numbered computer code or codes show up and each code represents a particular problem.

There is a secret way to get these codes yourself. Then, all you have to do is write them down and find a list somewhere of what each code means.

I remember I did a Google search for "Chrysler Computer Codes" and found a list so, just do that. Here is what you do to get the codes yourself, saving you time/money sending it out to a shop:

1. Put keys into ignition.
2. Turn the ignition 3 times, ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF
3. Obviously you will be turning the ignition NOT to start the car but the very last point before starting the car.
4. Do this within 5 seconds and you will see the codes appear where your odometer displays your car's mileage.

Many newer cars have this option, differs from model to model.

Now take your codes to your computer and find a list of Chrysler Computer Codes. Good luck.

Or you can post your codes here and we can find them for you. Or post them on the website 300m.org. We have them there along with great help for your M or any of the LH cars.

Go to the link below for a list of Chrysler Codes, after you write down the codes you found listed on your odometer.

Please report back and let us know what codes, if any, you pulled and I am sure someone here has experience with your problem.
