Heater fan, rear window defogger electrical problem

Hi folks,

Wondering if someone may have insight into a electrical problem.

My heater fan and rear window defogger only work with the car is on but not running. As soon as I start the car, neither fan nor defogger works.

Any suggestions as to what this problem might be and how to fix it?

I would suggest checking your fuses, then check your grounds around the fuse box.. that is wierd how it runs on "on" but not with the engine started.

With a careful read of the wiring diagram, I followed the problem back to the car ignition switch. There were several main wires that had fused together. That could explain why I didn't have good accessory power, and yet, still didn't solve the problem until I took the ignition switch apart and noticed that the contact which powers heavy electrical drains like fan and defogger had worn down (car has 215,000 miles on it). filing the contacts, re-bending the copper contacts, eventually did the trick.
Problem solved for now. However, a newer ignition switch would be a better solution. Anyone have a Geo Tracker or Suzuki Sidekick ( 1990-1995) with unused ignition switch for $25 or so? Thanks

What if someone has a similar problem but the heat does not cut on or the window defroser at all. There seems to be a little bit of heat coming out. I am thinking the fan might be the problem or the motor but, if that is the problem where can I find parts for a 95 geo tracker?

Wait are you saying your fans work but you have no heat? If thats the case check your coolant level, then check the heater core to see if it is leaking. PLease explain in more details your symptoms.

This wasn't my car. My g/f's mother explained the symptoms the best she can. She ended up taking it to the shop for some unknown reason. thank you for your help
