Would this have caused any serious damage? (Video)

I know the H2 is protected underneath (although I dont know how well...) but if you watch the tires. They are going all over the place. Is that something the H2 can handle?

The front passenger side tire is going all over the place because he broke a tire rod. If you watch closely when you see the front driver's side tire spinning like crazy ( the H2 has open differentials) the passenger side one suddenly grips and pulls to the driver side. The force of it suddenly pulling like that snapped the tie rod. IMHO Hummers are very poorly engineered vehicles. I have heard many reports of problems even when they are still new. I would never trust an H2 on road, let alone off road. They are nothing more than a trendy piece of overpriced gas guzzling hardware. If you want a serious off road machine this is not it.

Hmm...Whats a tire rod? What does it do?

Ive seen a image of the H2's front suspension, and there is all kinds of stuff going on. Its hard to make out what anything is.

A tie rod, is basically a rod that connects the wheels to the steering system. They are the main things they adjust when you go in to have an alignment done. I had new tie-rods installed on my 84 Toyota Van so an alignment could be done since the old ones were froze. All tie-rods look almost similar to this.

Wow... It's really lame that they can break that easy. How dissapointing. I mean... That looked like a typical off road situation. So I figured what happened there was something the car was designed to do -_-

Hmm.... I wonder how the H1 or H3 fair in that same situation.

Quite differntly, they are a totaly differnt vechile.


The H2 is not an off roader, its a soft roader, built on an old truck chassis with an ugly body on top.
Its all show and no go as they say.

This video was discussed in the Hummer forum at AF 18 months ago.
I agree with the above diagnosis, it suffered a broken tie rod.

Personally, harsh terrain and improper driving technique can break virtually any 4x4, Jeeps, Landrovers, Hummer H1's, whatever.

Anyone who off-roads extensively knows that tie rods and U-joints are weak points in any vehicle and will break on the trail

This is a good thing. It's better to break an easily-replaced tie rod than damage more expnsive components, like steering boxes, frames, axles etc.

Frankly a Hummer's sins are in stying the thing has to look like something it isn't. It's a very good general-purpose SUV, competent off-road, with very comfortable highway ride and excellent towing capability etc.

It's just styled to look like a Jeep on steriods, which is something it is not. Using cheapo plastic grilles and bumper extensions but disguising them to look like tough black painted or chrome steel is too gimmicky for me.
