Is my Water Pump bad?

1994 GTP 3.4L 114K I am running without a thermostat right now, because if I put one it, my car overheats. Without the thermostat, I am fine, except for the fact that the car will not get above 150 degrees and its getting pretty cold outside. When I remove the radiator cap, and start the vehicle, it does not appear that the coolant is circulating. It just kind of sits there. If anything, it spills over the top a little. If I goose the throttle, nothing changes. Its as if the water pump is not really pumping. Does anybody know of a test I can perform to confirm the functionality of my water pump?

If the water pump were not pumping at all the car would overheat regardless. I would assume that there is some movement in the coolant but if it overheats with a thermostat I would have to believe that the water pump is indeed bad.

take off the hose and start the car. if water starts pouring out then the pump is working

I'd check the radiator to see if it's blocked.
