Poor mileage on 95 PA

Ran diagnostic OBD I on my 95 PA. I have 44,000 miles on it (bought it from little old lady). Car runs beautifully. Received no errors or problems, but only get between 19 and 24 mpg. Car should get 27-29. Any suggestions? I have an hour long commute to work each way which is why I bought this car - for the anticipated mileage. Not doing better than my old van, plus I have car payment. HELP!

A basic tune-up should help...sparkplug change (and possibly wire change also), replace your air, breather, and fuel filter, along with the PCV valve. Check your tire pressures, you'd be suprised how much they effect mileage! You might want to have your fuel injectors cleaned, also, seeing as your car has so few miles for its' age.

I agree with Loekee75 however, don’t' forget the 02 sensor. They control as much as 20-30% of your fuel curve. You might try, mixing a few bottles of Lucas fuel injector cleaner with the gas for several tanks and then add some Heet gas line antifreeze to several tanks. I have found that combination works wonders for the "little ole lady cars" that are just driven to the market and never reach operating temp. When 02 sensors build up crud and never reach max operating temp, your mileage suffers!

book mileage on my 95 PA is 17-19 in town, 28-30 on the hwy. 24-25 in mixed driving, like a commute to work is about the middle. What kind of driving is done on your commute for an hour? How many total miles one-way, how many on hwy, how many on general surface streets? How do you leave a light or stop sign? I agree with the tune-up issues already mentioned. Have done them to mine. It might help to change the transmission filter and fluid for longevity if not mileage along with all else mentioned by Loekee75 and HotZ28.
