Getting a key made for a 1988 Bonneville

I just bought a 1988 bonneville and the previous had lost the key to the door/trunk. I called around and it seems Pontiac only holds on to their key codes for 10 years. So they say they can't help me. Now, my only option is a locksmith..... $75 for one key. Anyone know of any place I can get a key made or find the key codes for this car?

one more thing... does anyone know if the key code is stamped anywhere on he car. i read that that might be a possiblity and i've found some number here and there but i don't know what to look for,

I looked through my 90 factory service manual and could not find anything on the location of the key code. If I'm not mistaken though, the key code is normally stamped on a knock out part of the key. This knock out is where a key ring goes but is normally removed upon new car delevery.

There are no key codes on any of the lock cylinders for your vehicle. If you have the knockout, you'be hit a homerun.

I would suggest one of two things.

1) Take out a door cylinder or trunk and take to locksmith to have key made. They'll have to replace the face cap on the lock, but it beats them having to pull the door sleeve.

2) If vehicle has locking glove box, take it out and take to locksmith. They can get 4 of the 6 cuts needed for the key from a glovebox and progression the other 2 cuts. May take a couple keys to get working key, but again it beats having to pull the door sleeve.

Being a locksmith, these are the 2 methods we use for making a door/trunk key to GM 6 cut vehicles.

Thanks fo all the good adivise. But I've solved the problem. I also have a 1990 Cavalier. Just as a guess I tried the door key for this car on the Bonneville and to my great suprise it worked.
