Changing Oil to a synthetic in 2006 Civicphogsten 12-01-2005, 12:18 AM Hi, I recently purchased a 06 Civic LX Sedan w/automatic 5 speed transmission. I have 1400 miles on the car. There is special break-in oil in the engine now. Does anyone know what this special oil is (i.e., straight 30 weight, etc.)? I would also like to go to synthetic oil (possibly Royal Purple - 5W20). This company recommends that the engine has at least 2000 mile before it to be used in order to break in. I read that the V-TEC engine doesn't break in until 7000 miles or so. What would you recommend? Change to synthetic at 2000 miles? Change to synthetic at 7000 miles? Paul corning_d3 12-01-2005, 01:18 AM Change it when your ready. Break-in periods are damn near non-existent anymore, but i would wait 'til 2000 miles. Paul We just bought a 2006 and the dealer said because of Additives in the oil they recommend leaving the original oil in the car till the car tells you it's time to change the oil. Then any 5w-20 synthetic will be fine. The dealer said that the average oil change on the Civics could be around 5000 miles. The car will tell you when it is time to do an oil change and it keeps track of the oil life by calculating engine revelutions and some other stuff. You can change every 3000 miles or 2000 if you like... That's not a problem, I would just let the additive in the original oil have as much time to do what they are suppose to do... Just my opinion... But I do plan on going to synthetics as well. Probably Mobil or Castrol.. coalminer 12-01-2005, 03:48 PM We just bought a 2006 and the dealer said because of Additives in the oil they recommend leaving the original oil in the car till the car tells you it's time to change the oil. In reading my 05 owners manual, the normal oil change interval is 10,000, and the severe schedule is 5,000. The first oil change for my car was at 10,000 and it was on the dealer, but when I get to 20,000 which should be about the 1st of Feb. I average about 2500 miles a month, my commute to work is 76 miles each way. I am going to use synthetic oil too, I am a little partial to Castrol myself..... The maint reqd light will blink for 30 seconds when it reaches 9000 miles after an oil change, or stay on at 10,000 miles, is that the same as what it says for the 06? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
