Hey everybody. I need a little help with my transmission here. I have a 350 in my 71 nova and behind it is a New Process 4 speed tranny, but as far as I can tell, New Process never made transmissions for the nova or even Chevy. Making it hard to find parts. anyone else have a tranny made by New Process Gear in their Nova?
Any advice would be great!

is it a side loader

aluminum case ?

there was an aluminum 4 speed side loader for a few years in the 80s, but very uncommon, sounds liek it may be one of those
i cant remember the model name of it though

What does side loader mean exactly. I have heard the term alot but never found out exactly what it meant. The linkages connect to forks going through the side of the tranny if thats what you mean. It is an aluminum case though, arn't most transmissions?
If you can confirm this is the tranny it would be awesome

A New Process box that i'm familiar with is a truck item, very heavy duty and not suitable for cars unless you hack up the floor. They had a very steep 1st gear and you would have ground clearance issues.

You should either have a Borg Warner T-10 (on the rare side, came in steel and aluminum, could have a steel case with aluminum tail housing), Muncie M20, M21, M22 which were aluminum. Or it could be a Saginaw, which is steel.

All of the above has the shift forks through the tail housing or side cover. I've never heard of one called a side loader.

Top loaders were mainly Ford units that a top cover, the shift forks came out of the side of the case.

If you have some numbers on the case or tail housing you can find out what you have. Check around or Google or message me with them and I can help.

I have looked around on the web a bit and havn't really found any good info. I need anything you can give me. here are all the numbers I could find. the main casting numbers on the side of the case are C-15390 diectly under the New Process symbol. there are some more smaller numbers on a flat area back near the tailhousing. the first line is CB1189281, then 4030811 149 on another line below. the only thing I could find on the tailhousing is the New Process symbol and a small ACE CO.


thanks again, desprately need anything you can find. I am almost to the pint of buying a new tranny to relpace one that still works. that would be a first for me.

Thanks for the link. the pic of the 833 is a bit hard to see, but it does look something like that. the tailhousing is completely different though. not the 4 wheel drive one i guess. the tailhousing is where i am running into trouble because the shifter mounting plate puts the linkages (if I had any that would fit) right in front of the speedo cable.
do you think you could get some better details if I emailed you some pics of my tranny and tailhousing?
