Ok - how hard is it to replace the motor mount thats located by the rack, I was told you have to remove the rack bolts and soforth to get it changed, the shop that put it in, Tire Kingdom, does not do them any more, and will only offer a refund! So, is it tuff? or better have another shop do it? Thanks!

i just did mine. the answer is yes, all 4 bolts of the steering rack has to be loosened, and the rack pushed up otherwise you won't get the mount out.

Oh what joy! I am going to do this on my own. Is there anything you can fill me in on? What year is yours? If a 92 do you have a part number for that mount? Just want to check on-line first. Is it called a trans or engine mount? Is it hydralic? That would be so helpful! Do I just loosen the rack or is there anything I need to take apart first - like tie rods etc., Anything will help! Thank you! :smokin:

ok,
lets see.
first off, my car is a 91. i got my mount here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8002459844&category=50454

don't worry about the shipping, that amount was not for the us.

instructions.
lift up your car on the driver side with a jack, support it wit a stand. take off the left front wheel. support the engine/transmission with a bottle type jack, so you can lift up the trans/engine a bit. use a spot of the housing, do not use the jack to push up against a pan, or the area where the pan seals against the housing, on the very outmost corner the housing is sticking out a bit, thats where you could use the jack for support. gets tricky with the 4 bolts of the steering rack. i loosened them from the top, meaning, i opened the hood and by using a 1/2 ratchet/breaker bar with 3 extensions i was able to take off all 4 bolts sliding the tool between the firewall and the engine, that is the easiest and most convenient way, so you don't have to crawl under the car to take them out. now all 4 bolts have to come out all the way so you can push up the steering rack by hand when wiggling the mount out (still tight, even with the loose rack). Now unbolt all 3 bolts of the mount that are located within the frame/crossmember. lift up the engine slightly, which gives yo a little more access to the plate that holds the mount on the transmission side. 3 more bolts to take out, now your mount is all lose and can be lifted, pulled out and wiggled out, that is the tricky part, cause of the limited space. use the bottle neck jack to help you. the main problem is the rack though. you need to push the mount up high enough, so the bolts attached to the mount clear the holes of the frame/crossmember. once you got the mount out, unbolt the plate from the mount that goes on the tranmission side, reinstall the plate on your new mount and put the new one in.
i did not loosen any tie rods, wasn't necessary. be careful with those 3 bolts that go into the transmission housing, do not strip those threads in the housing, don't overtighten.

Gosh - I can't thank you enough! Need 1 more ext. and I'm set, its nice to have ALL the tools before getting started! When I had this mount replaced before it cost me $662.89, don't know why it broke again, cheap part maybe - I can get away with the mount, but to spend this amount again means I'm camping in the dog house. Thanks again for explaining this, doesn't sound to bad! Well, I letcha know how it came out! :smokin:

Really!!! Thats what I thought myself. The mount was 198.96, and alittle over 400.00 for labor, and the rest was shop charges and taxes! Getting ready to replace the mount tomorrow, am worried but will take my time and try to get through it. Thanks for your help!
