i just bought a e 250 6 cilinders 4.9L and i see that when you go more than 40 mph the engine is to noisely , looks like the last speed is missing, Does anybody know how many speeds does this transsmission have, any comments about it?
thanks in advance
any information welcome

What year is it? That makes a difference for the cause of the problem.

Presumably its an automatic transmission.
These transmissions were 4 spd automatics. Possibly the shifter linkage is improperly adjusted, so when its in "D" you are actually in "2" which would hold it in second gear.
Does the vehicle move when you have the shifter in "N" (neutral?)
Also, you should have the overdrive engagement button on the end of the shifter. What happens when you push the button at highway speed? Do the engine revs drop, like its shifted into a higher gear?
Also, does it shift from 1st to 2nd normally, or does the engine rev very high? If this happens, there may be a throttle position sensor or linkage from the transmission to the throttle plate that is stuck or disconnected.

Also, a transmission service (changing the fluid and filter) may help the problem.

thanks for the info,
let me tell you that in the dashboard, it only has 1 2 D, but not overdrive, y tried already do all the gears from 1 to 2 and to D and did all the speeds (3) , what i dont know is if after de 3rd speed should be a 4th, because if this is the case, is not engaging, i drove the van at 65 mph, but sounds that this speed is to high rpm,the which i think it shouldnt be, but i dont have experience in vans, so i acept suggestions,, thank you again for your help

You should have an overdrive 4th gear. It is not controlled by moving the gearshift lever.

It is controlled by a button, usually at the end of the gearshift lever (But it might be on the dashboard, too, marked "OD").

You push the button once, which allows the truck to shift into overdrive at highway speed. (There should be a little light that comes on, too)

Push the button again, and the overdrive is switched off and you only get the 3 gears you already have.

Look for this button and see if it works properly. If you cannot find an overdrive button anywhere, its possible the van simply had a 3 speed auto trans, although it would be pretty rare. Most came with 4 spd overdrive-equipped transmissions.

hi, thanks for tjhe info, there is no overdrive, so i agree, that it must be a 3 speed transmission, but i still tink, that it must be somethiing wrong, the 3rd speed engage at 25 milles, and when you go at 55 or more sounds that the rpm are too high

You are NOT attaining 3rd gear. The reason is lack of vacuum signal to the "modulator valve" located at the Rt rear edge of the trans. There are two likely causes:

1) Vacuum line broken or fell off somewhere (carefully follow EACH vacuum line and verify it's connected and not cracked/no holes in it).

2) The modulator has a torn diaphram. You can check by applying vacuum to it, it should NOT leak but hold the vacuum, basically forever.

3) It is *possible* that the trans was replaced, and the "nipple cap" was NOT removed from the modulator valve, or the hose was not connected/fell off AT the modulator.

I agree that you have the optional "C6" transmission, one of the best ever invented.
