1991 Geo Tracker.

I recently purchased a geo tracker to use as a winter car and store the Camaro SS. I was told it was 4x4 and I test drove it for an hour and nothing happened. I bought it on the way home alternator goes out. after I fix it I start driving it again and two weeks later the car dies out of the blue. So my friend and I push it back to the apartment and I notice the fuel injector is not spraying after many attepmts to crank it over. I buy a new fuel injector and start cranking it over to no avail. I start checking fuses and I see the IGN fuse blew. So I replace it and it starts to try to start. It runs really rough and vibrates the engine mad. Finally it starts and as it runs white smoke is bellowing out like a champ.

So I assume the Head gasket blew and order all the part and start the compression test I got 140 on all 4 cylinders. The chilton's says the compression needs to be 170-199psi (is that right). I go to drain the oil to start changeing the head gasket and to my suprise there's no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant. Instead its raw fuel and oil comming out of the crank case.

So I flush the oil change the filter and spark plugs add new oil and try to crank it over again the car won't start.

My only question right now is the compression really 170-199psi that seems high to me and why would my head gasket be at 140 on all 4 cylinders and not a sudden drop on say cylinders 1 and 2 like a normal blown headgasket.

The engine has not overheated since I have owned it.

Where would I get the ecu checked out at? How do I know if it is the ECU and not the head gasket. According to the Chilton's my compression is low, I was wanting to verify that first. Is it like the Mitsubishi Eclipse where there is a problem with leaky capacitors because if that is the case I can replace those myself easily. What causes the ECU to bog out?

you know what it is a mitsubishi computer. from 89 to 94 they used that one. on 95 and up they used a suzuki computer.

The problem with the Mitsubishi ECM is that it is under rated for the Suzuki system. The normal control voltages are higher than what the ECM can handle and various resisters, chips, etc. just burn up. A bad ECM will also cause your IGN fuse to blow, as will a bad O2 sensor. Good luck repairing your ECM.

baumbr thanks for the straight forward answer now how would I go about fixing it as in where would I send it to? or where would I purchase a new one or one thats less prone to giving out?

i seen a guy on ebay that repairs them for about 50.00 or look through some of the tracker forums there was a guy who got his fixed .he list the web address on that posting.

Where is the ECu located is it in the dash behind the radio?

The ECM is behind the left side speaker. Pull out the speaker and you will be able to see it. Look for a box that is about 4"x6". Remember where all the various other parts go that are also held up there by the screws that secure the ECM. Like most under dash work you will need to be a contortionist to get at all the fasteners, so do your warm ups and stretching before hand!

Wow pulling the ECU was wasy as heck. I dont have speakers they done got jacked. All I had to do was take the two screws out facing me then push the ecu down. Unplug it and remove two more screws after is was laying on the floor.
