Asking for a friend. Her car will not shift at all. It is stuck in park and she can't get it to move. What is the problem? Transmission or gear shift? Thanks, any help appreciated

There is a lock out if the brake pedel isn't pushed. Sounds like the problem may be in that system.

Thanks, jmblimo. So does that mean the lock out may be broken? Or is there a switch that controls it, or...... what do we look for?

I was mistaken about the brake activated switch. I was thinking about my Taurus. The Cutlass has a lockout switch activated by the ignition. I just went out to my convertible and you can hear a click when the key is turned to run, didn't have to start it. Without the click, the shifter side button can't be pushed in to move the shifter out of park. Mine is a console shifter but I would imagine the column shifter does the same thing. Sorry, I don't know which relay the click is coming from. Maybe someone else on the forum can help.

just a thought cuz its happened to me...is the car parked on a steep hill? if it is, the transmission might be stuck because of the stress from the weight of the car trying to go down the hill. i think it's called torque lock or something...just an idea

I have same car with exact same problem. The shift lever gets stuck in park sometimes. Just be aggressive with it. Wiggle it around while pressing on the button hard. Or just give it a good punch. It will release. Mine always does.
