As I’m waiting on curing times for the Cobra Project I’ve decided to start on my Nissan Z-Tune. The project got off to a bad start actually, and put me in a pretty childish mood for the last few days.. I’m sure many of you have read how my dog managed to destroy nearly all of this kit before I had even managed to lay a single coat of primer down. If not, I posted about the bad news, and went into a mood.

Anyhow, even though the Skyline has been built to death, and the Z Tune has been discussed and posted so many times I’m sure many of you that have ventured into this progress thread are thinking, well another Skyline, or another Z Tune. Sorry to say, you’re right. It is just another skyline. But the Skyline model is a bit of an albatross for me now, in terms of me actually getting one even 50% completed, so for this reason the model isn’t boring but more like a “I will get one on the shelf”..!!

Anyhow, kit first came from www.HLJ.com along with P/E upgrades. Dog soon put paid to the fact I saved a few quid on the model, and thus I have now repurchased the model from my LHS.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41123

The kit is basically a R34 V-Spec but without the V-Spec upgrades, with a black sprue with additional wheels, minus the V-Spec upgrades. I’ve got all upgrade sets, as can be seen below due to another failed skyline build, and I can’t see much difference TBH. It’s a very small change in some places, rear diffuser, bigger bore exhaust, and newer discs and ever so slightly different wheels. It’s the body that shows the most changes.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41124

The Tamiya P/E upgrades are sparse in comparison to say SMS or S27, but they look fantastic, and the metal turned exhaust is nice, and it even has carpet mats with little NISMO logos for the mats… It’s more of a dress up kit, and not a kit to replace much from the box contents. P/E meshes and pedals, but the rest is all pretty much dress up, and will add to the model. Nice set, worth getting but VERY pricey.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41125

However what is going on with the newer front NISMO style bumper is beyond me. The instructions call out to carefully remove some molding tabs.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41130

Takes some careful trimming, and you have to be careful as if you don’t remove the plastic the bumper doesn’t sit correctly.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41131

This looks better now.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41132

All the parts ready for washing. There are virtually no real visible pin holes, mold lines are minimal, and the body has a few lines around the front and rear bumpers. The front bonnet openings have a VERY small amount of flash, you have to look REAL hard for it. Makes cleaning this kit up easy.. Nothing much to do really, ithe model does have mold lines, but not many at all.. It's such a shame Tamiya don't release any decent newer models, as they really do konw what they are doing..

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41136

I deepened the panel lines, sanded and washed and then primed. My preparation work is getting better. This is almost perfect for me, no runs panel lines look nice and neat, primer is smooth, all in all some pretty decent work for me. So I’m certainly learning.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41137

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41138

And that’s all for now. I’ll keep you posted, but this model will not have an engine, will be painted in NISMO Z Tune colours and therefore will be pretty boring for most of you.

Nice start to a great kit.
The Front bar bemused me a little too, apart from that it is one cool kit.
I'll be keeping my eye out for this when it's done, hopefully not before mine I hope.

Some progress on my Z Tune skyline. I’ve made a start on the body. Nothing heroic, just good old Tamiya TS sprays. Applied TS-17 Gloss Aluminum, tricky paint to lay down even, as the silver if applied too wet can change colour and leave dark spots. It is therefore preferable to apply TS-17 in mists, rather then try and make the colour coat gloss up. I applied a really light mist, followed by three heavier mists to just bring the silver out, and get an even coverage.

Like so –

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41233

Once you have an even coverage, the paint will be dull. Even though it’s meant to be a self glossing metallic, I’ve never been able to get a decent shine from it without the help of clear coat. Tamiya TS-13 is perhaps the best choice for TS-17, the two go together so well, little point in using Acrylic, or risking a hotter automotive lacquer.

Starting with a few mists, I gradually built the clear up over six coats until the shine is almost like a mirror. I always clear coat with TS-13 within 30 – 45 mins of the last colour coat. I think the jury is still out on whether this is the best method or not to apply TS-13, but it worked last time I used TS-17 and TS-13 so did the same again… And good news, I’ve built a small photo booth in my house using, oddly the on suite bathroom. It has really powerful lights in my bedroom shower room, and it’s made a superb photo booth by adding a few additional desk lamps and white paper. And as the shower is in an enclosed separate area, perfectly safe from any water.. Enjoy the pictures…

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41236

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41237

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41238

That’s it. Four mists of TS-17, followed by three mist of TS-13 and then three coats of gradual heavy Ts-13, the final coat being the gloss up coat to reduce orange peel. Doesn't look too shinny, as silver is a bad colour to get a nice reflection from. It's even and free from orange peel and so should wax up nicely.. You can see your face in it, but the pictures do not show the smooth paint. One of my less stressful paintjobs, but my cobra is still the best I've ever done.

Will start the wheels next, and make a start on the chassis. I’ll put the body into my airing cupboard to harden off, but TS-13 goes hard within 7 – 14 days.. I’ve polished it out after 10 days no problems, so this should be a progressively faster build then most of my past builds.

This is a good kit, and looks to be a great introduction to model car building. It has a few issues though, mainly the engine is molded to the chassis, so carefully you have to detail the engine after top colour coating the chassis, the front bumper needs some clean up, and if you want to build a true Z Tune, the interior is two tone. Could be tricky for a beginner.

It does however have perfect fitment, superb instructions and does have metal transfers and a small amount of CF decal.

The Ferrari 360 is a great kit to get into model building, or even the Skyline R34 V Spec is a good start, but I think many will agree the Tamiya Honda S2000 is also a great starter..

In summary, yes I think a beginner could make a start with the Z Tune but it does have a few areas where you might get frustrated with.

As I said, it's hard to find out what actually works... As this thread says,

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=278844&highlight=ts13

clear within 15 mins. I waited around 25 - 30 mins, as this is what I did last time I used TS17 and TS13.

I've searched and searched in regards to TS13, and I've never got a decent answer, so just did what I did last time. My Merc SLK was cleared around 30 mins after final coat of TS17, this was months ago and it hasn't cracked..!!

What and see I guess.

Tamiya recommends applying clear within one hour, or after a long drying period (up to a month). He did it right. I always apply Tamiya clear over color w/in minutes of the last color coat. I sneak up on it, starting slowly w/mist coats and finishing w/wet coats. Never had any cracking problems whatsoever this way and I've shot a lot of models w/Tamiya sprays. If you let the color sit overnight w/o using a dehydrator and apply clear the next day or after a few days or a week is precisely the timeframe that may likely cause cracking later, and later can mean months. It's happened to at least one person I know.

ZoomZoom,

Thanks for putting my mind at rest. When you are first starting out (only been building this year, as many of you know) you sometimes wonder if you are doing something right.

I searched a lot in regards to TS-13, as I know the paint is good, but care has to be taken when applying it. Thanks for letting me know I'd not made a massive error. Checking the paint now it has dried some more, the finish appears a little thinner then X22 (been working with X22 a lot recently) be yet much harder. I think Tamiya compound, and then Tamiya finish compound followed by a good wax is all this needs, as the TS-13 is a not as shinny as X22.

Is this due to the rapid drying time, as I notice that with slower curing paints the gloss doesn't reduce as quick, if at all. I mean enamel never seems to loose gloss, Arcylic X22 remains really glossy, but TS clear does lose a little shine as it cures. Buffs right up perfectly fine though. I guess this is why you can't buff out TS-13 clear before it has fully hardened off. As it cures some of the shine is lost, and it could well dull if polished too early.. Anyone know why slower curing paints loose less gloss as they harden off?

And thanks for the comments guys. So far, no more doggie related incidents as I've moved all my model supplies out of the dinning room, even though I still work on the dinning room table.

TS 13 clear is weird stuff. Many aren't happy with it's final gloss.

It goes on so nice and wet and looks great, but usually when it dries the finish is nothing like when it was sprayed. Usually buffs out just fine if you've made sure to apply enough.

What seems to happen is a couple things, I think it sometimes has a chemical effect on the paint below. I've sprayed it over a very smooth color coat, the wet coat of TS looked incredible, and after it dried it had a slight texture that was not present on the color coat.

Another thing w/TS 13 is that it shrinks a LOT when it dries. It will not hide errors. It will not fill in any graininess below it; it simply takes on the same grain pattern and sometimes a little of it's own.

I've gotten to where I spray the TS 13 in two sessions. One after the color, and another after it's dried in the dehydrator at least overnight, and I've wet polished it w/3600 or so to level the finish. Then I apply more TS 13 so when I do a final wet polish w/the gamut of cloths and liquid compound the results are quite smooth. The longer you spend carefully leveling the paint w/the polishing cloths, the better the finish. Ask CADguy. He's learned this technique and his recent finishes are amazing. I'm lazier, I polish/compound with a little less emphasis on a completely glass-smooth surface, I can live w/a small amount of orange peel that approximates a 1:1 car's surface in scale (the lazy man's cop-out LOL). Getting that glass smooth final finish takes time, experience, and elbow grease.

To all those that are attempting to view the pictures, they appear to be not working. www.blurryimage.com is down again. Has been all weekend, I need to find a better image host provider. Sorry about this.

Anyhow, the curse of the skyline continues. I’ve nicely masked and sprayed the interior, a nice black and red, struck the P/E set carpets in with the nice nismo logos, and admired my work only to go and drop a bottle of enamel black in it… I was screwing the cap back on, when I slipped with the lid and drop the paint.. Stupidly the interior tub, all completed was underneath.

It’s a right mess. Carpets look ruined, logos might be saved, as I got some spare but I think I can clean this up, as its enamel over acrylic. Not sure. Would like to save the carpets, but I can’t pull them up. The adhesive is really strong, and they will just rip. I’ve got a spare tub, so might have to make my own carpets out of flocking… I’m a little pissed at the moment. Why I can’t seem to get a skyline completed past 50% is beyond me..!!

But I’ve completed the wheels and as soon as I get somewhere to host the images I’ll post more progress, hopefully I’ll have cleaned up the mess inside the interior..

mickbench
11-21-2005, 04:07 PM
Images are now back, and I've managed to clean up the black paint I tipped in the interior tub. Enamel thinner and white spirit did the job, but the carpets do pong a little. Also black over red doesn’t clean too well… It made a mess but I’ve done the best I can, I also touched up a little with red paint to hide the black stains.

Any good -

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41465

I replaced the NISMO logos, the front seats and side panels were not glued in thankfully so I've redone the front seats, but it seemed a shame to ruin the carpets, and start again after all the masking etc..

If it looks rubbish then I'll start again, but I think I've managed to clean it up OK.

I'll post more pictures later, wheels etc..

mickbench
11-21-2005, 05:52 PM
These are the pictures I was going to post, so here goes.

The wheels on the Z Tune are really boring. All in black, hardly any detail, and a NISMO decal, so not a lot to look at really. Sprayed with TS-29 that’s it.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41466

The interior is now cleaned up, and I’ve dry fitted most of it. Red /Black isn’t really one of my favorite combinations, I’ve been a little on the fence with the combo for some time now, anyhow as I wanted to build a true as possible Z Tune, red /black it was.

TBH, this isn’t some of my best work. I hate masking two tone seats. It’s so fiddly it would try the patience of a saint, and it did. I had to spray the tub white first, so as I could then spray the red for the rear seats. I then had to carefully mask this off and paint the rest of the tub flat black. Then the rear seats required semi gloss sides, for the half leather.

I applied the P/E provided mats and mat logos, flocked the rear parcel shelf, added mesh for the speakers and then just touched up a small area with enamel black where the tape had pulled some black off. This was were it all went wrong, as anyone who reads above will know. Paint all over the place, and my nicely painted interior.. What a mess…!!

I had to peel the old NIMSO logos off, and apply new ones and wash the carpets with thinner etc. Problem was I was going to have to attach the new logos directly to the tub as the carpets were already installed even after I cleaned it all up. Wasn’t easy, it was very tricky. This is why they are a little bigger, as the bigger size gave me something to grab onto..

But somehow, through the massive f**k up I’ve managed to pull out something decent ish.. It’s not going to win any awards, but once it’s all installed and on the shelf it will be forgotten about like all my other models. Even though I think many down the street heard how loud I can swear..

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41467

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41469

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41471

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41472

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41473

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41475

So, after a ruined interior due to black paint and then cleaned up, it’s now almost completed. Steering wheel logo, some small parts for the parcel shelf, needs gluing and that’s it completed

Thanks for looking.. all comments welcome, good or bad.

Looks Great, but why did you leave the white border on the Nimso Logos for the carpets.

mickbench
11-25-2005, 03:25 AM
Thanks for the nice comments.

Hiroboy, I ruined the first set of carpet logos when I dropped a bottle of enamel black into the tub leaving black paint all over the place, and I had to clean it all off with white spirit etc.. The first set of logos were only good for the bin, I tried to peel the carpets backup again, but they were stuck pretty well. I could have ripped them up and used flocking, but they were clean and looked fine.

So to save the carpets even though they stunk of turps I decided to attach the new logos directly. Ever tried to stick anything with a sticky back into tight awkward areas... Not the simplistic thing to do. So I made the logos slightly bigger. I was going to cut them once installed and remove the excess, or that was the plan. But didn't happen as I was a bit worried it would all go wrong. Looks OK, and better then no logos at all, I was thankful the P/E set provided some extras.

Quick build Mick - looking good!

I have this one on the shelf but still waiting for my P/E parts - over six months now from Models in Motion!
Have you painted the chassis yet?

mickbench
11-25-2005, 08:28 AM
It is a quick model to build, as there isn't really a lot to it. Nice crisp details though. I've not done the chassis yet, need to pick up another can of TS-17 as I only had half a can when I started.

I've got some more pictures to post, but haven't done so yet. I've polished the body, done the exhuast, brake discs and all the under chassis parts. I've also painted the P/E number plates after a few goes and painted the display name plate (it was there so thought why not), so this build should be done soon. Fits like a glove, it's got the best fit I've ever had.. Really good.

As for models in motion, I gave up with them months ago. They messed up one of my orders and did little to try and fix it. I use modelsforsale and HLJ most of the time now.

Been working hard on the Z Tune, interior is now completed and I’ve made some great progress on the body.

The window trim on this model came out perfect. By making the panel lines and window frame lines deeper before I applied any paint really paid off. Panel lines look great, and the window trim just came out fantastic. My best trims yet.

Entire body has been compounded with all three Tamiya compounds. Coarse, followed by normal and then two applications of finish, this stuff really does work great with TS-13. Brings out a great shine, shots below show the nearly completed body, and the shine is amazing… I’ve impressed myself with this, I can not only see my face, but the wall behind it and everything.. Pictures do not show how great this looks.. OK, enough blowing my own trumpet, have a look..

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41547

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41548

And front with mesh and P/E numberplate. Painted the numberplate after many attempts. Looks OK ish. Also done the panel lines all round the car, and applied the front Metal Transfer, that was REALLY hard to apply. I took to attacking it with the transfer stuck to a toothpick with blue tack. Front headlights were not painted as per guide, as the build guide says paint only the chrome part. I think it’s a little wrong, and you also need to paint a small section of the body black as well. The front light lenses are installed, just can't see them too well in the pictures as I cleaned and waxed them before installation to make them as clean as possible.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41551

For the rear, I added a NISMO P/E plate, as I had painted both the GTR and NISMO and just couldn’t decide, so used them both. The metal transfers were a little too sticky and I didn’t get a chance to play with them much once I offered them up to the body. Hence with the Nissan badge is little off..

I painted the rear tailgate light with clear red. Looks better then the oversized decal.

http://www.blurryimage.com/pic.php?mode=O&pid=41553

And that’s all for tonight. Entire car has been waxed, apart from where I need to apply some decals, and then I’ll wax again, and attach the door mirrors and rear wing.

I'll post more pictures soon showing some of the chasis work... But for now, I'm off to bed.. Feel a little happier with the build now, and my dog had better not touch it now, or she is a dead dog.. :lol2:

Many thanks for the kind comments... I try and post good information so that if anyone who is new to building or anyone is building this model they can learn. After all, I've taken a lot from the site myself.

TBH though, I've already admitted that I need to slow down a little on building models, as my free time is being consumed by this.. Therefore little update at the moment. Did a small bit last night, no more then an hour really (man it was soooo hard to only spend one hour) and got the exhaust done, but due to me trying to keep model building to one hour a night at the moment got no pictures yet..

I'll keep you posted, don't worry everyone. Nissan Z Tune will be rolling of the MB model production line hopefully this year..!!

Another update for you all, however this build should be done by now. But it’s not as last night I only spent an hour and tonight I’ve only taken pictures of whats been done so far. I’ll have a good push with this at the weekend, too much to catch up on at the moment. But the Skyline is not dead; just for once a Skyline is going slow..!!

Sadly though once this build is completed I will have to stop for a few months as I do have to start catching up on many other issues at home etc.. So enjoy this one, as it will be perhaps my last build for a few months....

The brake discs have been completed. I applied Alclad II Aluminum over a semi gloss black first, detailed the hubs with black and applied the decals. I then applied the P/E parts to all four and then proceeded to clean the P/E parts first with emery paper to scrub them a little, to simulate being used – can’t really see it too well but the effect is good all the same and then I cleaned the P/E of finger prints using Lacquer thinner on a cotton bud. That’s when I made a small mistake and got thinner on one or the front calipers. Alclad II is mostly lacquer thinner with metal particles so that didn’t do me any favours.. Anyhow all fixed and they look superb I think..

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/8582/pa3001196uo.jpg

I did manage to decal the body last night, and I’ve decaled the small area that needs CF for the rear wing, test fitted. Rear wing still needs silver and clear, I’ll get it done soon. Wasn’t overly happy with the CF decal supplied. Bit of an arse to apply.

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/9243/pa3001201tu.jpg

And first shots of the under chassis. Still needs black detailing, but test fitted. Painted the whole exhaust with Alclad II aluminum and burnt metal gold’s. Then washed with black ink and then dry brushed the whole lot with silver. Needs some small heat stains adding, but looks good. Also test fitted some sub assemblies. Dry brushed and picked out details etc with silver..

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/6483/pa3001218fx.jpg

And this shot shows of the awesome muffler. It’s huge..!! In scale you would be able to put your fist into the real one, it’s massive. I’m not a big fan of oversized mufflers, as I think they look a little Kevin (slang in the UK for stupid looking addition to a car), but this one I can forgive. It’s a highly modified Skyline with oversized brake discs, larger wheels, massive body kit so the muffler doesn’t look out of place. I did paint the back of the exhaust black first, so it looks more realistic.

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/8192/pa3001234bw.jpg

And that’s it for now. Still got a lot to do. And yes – Watch the front bumper all of you, as the paint guide is very wrong. I didn’t paint the front badge holder black, near the front grill. See a previous picture, and when the metal transfer is applied and then the decal, due to being a silver body colour, and silver GT logo, all you see is a bit of red for the front badge.. I noted the front lights were not correctly marked in the guide, but missed the front badge holder next to the front grill.. Oh well..

Update to the Skyline project. I’ve gone all out tonight to get this nearly completed. Because as of next week I’ll have no time for model building, got far too much to do. Nothing to do with Christmas, I’ve got Compaq /HP exams to study for, and my house is about to get decorated.. I’m not paying someone else to do it, I’ll take a break from model building and do it myself. Its well overdue, no excuses exams need taking, social life needs revitalizing, and house needs painting..!!

Anyhow, chassis has been detailed. Painted the wheel wells black, as well as the fuel tank. This is the completed chassis.

And with the wheels attached. I did dry brush the engine after a black ink wash, and then detailed a few areas etc.. But this is now completed.

Front air intake. P/E and P/E NISMO Template. Anyone using these templates be sure to set your airbrush at a low PSI. If you don’t the paint will seep under.

And the rear with that big fat muffler and rear “diffuser??” what ever that is, and it’s like an after thought, as there are no holes, no guide pins or anything.. Detailed with P/E but I just stuck it on where I think the build guide asked for.. A bit sloppy, not what you expect from Tamiya.. Still it’s attached now.

Interior glued in, painted the underchassis flat black just in case you can see any of it when the car is turned over.

And here she is, minus a fully painted rear wing, and no door mirrors. I should have these completed at the weekend, I’ll take some more pictures for you guys and that’s it for me.. No more for a few months.. I’ve got a tear in my eye now.. Lump in my throat.. Nah I’ll be back, but I've got to take a break or else this hobby really is going to rule my life.. but for now enjoy this.. Hope you all like it... The final exit if you will..!!

Fantastic Skyline! Another first-class build from you, Mick. Sorry that you have to leave us now, the forum just won't be the same without you... Have a great holiday, and come back to see us again!

I love that car. You did an excellent clean build!
The box art from this made me buy it.
Now, to only get one built.

H all,

I've not stopped checking the board out, just haven't had time to post much lately. Model is now done, I thank you all for the nice comments. It's a superb kit, builds easily and when I get chance (I'm hoping today)I'll make a completed thread for you all.

I'm toying with entering the build into the AFMOTY contest, all in the name of fun..

See ya.
