Tie Rod Ends 85 CapriceRageCage 11-09-2005, 07:55 AM It's time to change the tie rod ends (originals) to get past inspection, on my 85. I don't need to lift the car, or use jack stands, right? And how do I get the alignment to be the same after I replace the tie rods? silicon212 11-09-2005, 10:43 AM You're better off lifting the front of the car a bit so you can fit under it to do so. I suppose it can be done without lifting, but that's a little like trying to put oil in the engine through the PCV valve. ... You WILL have to adjust the toe after replacing the tie-rod ends, there's just no way around it. However, the toe is the one thing that you don't need a fancy machine for to get it "ballparked". You can use a couple of strings and a tape measure to do the deed. kahjdh 11-09-2005, 10:48 PM I just had to do this on my sisters car. It is alot easier to lift the car. What i do is use a little spray paint on the old ends before you take them off. Then replace them and put the new ones on the the old mark. The best way i know to get it as close as possable, But it is allways good to get an alighnment so you dont start going through tires.
