fuel pump access

:grinyes: 1996 Bonneville SE fuel pump sounds like it is getting ready to go. I read that newer model Bonnies (2000) and up have an access plate in the trunk floor which eliminates need to drop tank to replace fuel pump. Has anyone tried to cut a similar access opening access plate opening in the trunk floor of pre-2000 Bonnies? If so what problems were encountered and was it a dangerous project? Thanks!!

The older Bonne's had the tank under the seat, so if you cut an access hole, you could get fumes in the passenger cabin, and that would be bad.

Haven't heard of that being accomplished yet, but a good idea never the less. You would still have to remove fuel tank initially to cut an access plate in the right side forward area of trunk floor, then fabricate a weathertight access cover.
