I have a feeling in order to fix this issue i am going to have to replace my fuel pump. the gas guage bounces around and is never reading a correct reading. could it be the float? sending unit? any advice or past expierences would be helpfull.
Thanks in advance

Although I have a '97, it sounds like your fuel level sensor is bad.
(I'm an expert at replacing these, I dropped my tank 3 times in a 1 month period :banghead: replaced 1 level sensor and 2 fuel pump assemblies)

In order to replace it, you'll have to drop the tank. If you do a search in this forum on "fuel level sensor", look for threads by my name. I go into very detailed info on how to do it.

If you go to www.gmpartsdirect.com, you'll be able to search for the fuel level sensor as a separate part (It's only available thru dealers, parts stores only carry the whole pump assembly, very expensive). It should be 25-50% cheaper there than at a local dealer, but you'll wait about 2 weeks to get it.
Good luck,
Mike

It is likely your sending unit. GM Canada ran a campaign bulletin briefly last year for this problem as they believed the problem was related to fuel additives at our various fueling stations here. All I had to do was fill out a one page questionaire and they fixed my vehicle. They have since closed the campaign. My brother is having the same problem with his 2001 Jimmy and GM refuses to do anything about it now. The entire pump does not need to be replaced, but it will still run you about $500 bucks to have it fixed as the tank must be dropped and the pump removed to replace the sending unit.
