awile back i had to change my starter. when i took out the old one there was 1 shim in, so i put it back in with the new starter. it sounded terrible like it was barely engaging with the flywheel so i took it out and it was better, but not the best. well now 3 months later when i go to start it everything is fine but as soon as the car fires and i let off the key it makes a god awful noise like a slipping sound or possibly even sticking in for a moment. so does anyone think i should try to put the shim back in? any help or suggestions would be great

well you fly wheel might have been bad after you had the shim on. and when you took it off the flywheel was alredy done. So it might have toasted you new starter. take the sterter off and take a peak at the flywheel teeth.

well i looked at the flywheel after i took the shim out and i seemed fine, turned it about halfway around to check. but i think it is sticking a tad bit and i think if i put the shim back in it may quit but i hope it doest put it too far away from the flywheel either. still open to more suggestions

update:
that starter crapped out. went back for warranty and they replaced, with a better one, and it was shimless. popped it in no problems since. cheers

Advice: ask when you get a reman. starter if it needs shims, look in the box for them, or for some paper that says yes or no.
