What is a coolent temperature sender???

This whole engine temperature is really giving me #@&& lately! My engine is still running way too cool (155 or 160). I have replaced the rad cap, did a complete flush and replaced the stat with a 195.

BlazerLT said that it may be a defective coolent temperature sender or something. But what the crap is this? Is it hard to replace?

Its only like 10 bucks it screws into the block and then the electric connector gets plugged onto sender.

Tells you where to look

Before swapping it out, I would look at borrowing a scanner that does live data. The reason being that our trucks use 2 different temp sensors. One for the gauge, and one for the ECM. If the ECM is running the same temp as on the gauge changing the sensor won't help, if there is a vast difference (lets say gauge is 160 and ecm shows 200) then you know it's the sensor. This way you won't waste money.

Also are you getting heat?

97+ no longer have the sensor on the intake. I believe that the gauge and the PCM share the one between cylinders 3 and 5 on the block.

I thought that was for 98+ when they changed the ECM

You're right it was 98+. I was going to put that 97 was the last year, and after rewording it, I messed up.

:crying: Okay, I'm sorry..... I'll go, now.

 At least I'll admit when I mess up. I'm sure that you've seen that some guys, here, will argue about it even when they know they're wrong.

Another thought just came to mind... I wonder if your clutch fan is disengaging properly. If it's constantly engaged it could be cooling the engine too much....

....and reducing his gas mileage.

Makes sense.

I do have access to a scanner, so i'll do that tomorrow. But i really do think that the gauge is right cause like i said my heat doesn't get as hot as it should.

Ok this mite not be good but ill throw it out. This seems eerily similar to what happened to my sisters cavalier last february.Replaced the stat flushed and filled the coolant no heat.It wouldnt go past a 100 now granted there is an e fan in there but still it should go up to the 1/4 mark so no heat then one day no start and head gasket blew. There were no signs it was going as there was no coolant in oil or on ground, just out tailpipe which we did not know.So maybe you want to check out the oil .
