I have a 2000 Outback with approx. 130000 kms/60,000 miles and it seems to use oil.It doesn't smoke or seem to leak but I would say it uses maybe a litre of oil every 2000 to 3000 kms.Is this excessive for this vehicle.I know with North American vehicles the PCV valve can cause oil problems but I'm not that familiar with these.BTW it's a 2.4.

A 2.4?
I thought the Outback was a 2.5

I've never heard of one burning oil at that rate though, sounds like you have something wrong there.

Sorry. It is a 2.5.Haven't had the car too long.I am running 5w-30 and someone suggested heavier oil.

How's heavier weight oil going to help?

Doesn't make sense to me either.
