Engine namesDimex 02-07-2001, 08:32 PM Does anybody know what the new M3's engine is called? Like, RB26DETT or whatever it is that's a skyline. Well, actually, does anybody know it for the last M3 or the 3 series in general? Thank you. matt 03-24-2001, 11:12 AM The engine code for the last gen M3 <1996-up> is S52 <4 valve 3.2 liter 6 cylinder> the 1995 M3 was an S50 engine <4 valve 3.0 liter 6 cylinder> and the chassis code for both is E36. 320i/6 323i 325i 325e had an M20 engine <2 valve 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7 liter 6 cylinder> 318 had an M44 engine <4 valve 1.9 liter 4 cylinder> Hope this helps. l8 qab5b 05-31-2001, 12:45 PM i believe the new M3 engine code is S33 The originl M3 engine was S14B23 or S14B25 for sport evo hermunn123 06-08-2001, 11:04 PM hey matt, i didnt know that the '95 M3 had a 3.0 liter. did the '92-'95 also have 3.0 liters?? i thought all E36 M3's had 3.2 liters. matt 06-10-2001, 12:59 AM 95 was the only one of the E36 M3's with a 3.0 liter engine. 96-99 was a 3.2 liter. I'm not sure about the E30 M3's though. hermunn123 06-10-2001, 04:43 PM matt, the E30 M3's all had a DOHC, Inline 4, 2.3 liter engines that produced 195 hp. you're right when you said the '95 M3's had 3.0 liter inline 6's. but everything else before it('92-'94, euro only) also had 3.0 liter engines. these engines had 286 hp. in 96 when the 3.2 came out the euro M3's were upgraded to 321 horseys. USA recieved the same 3.2 liter upgrade but still only had 240 hp. :( qab5b 06-11-2001, 11:17 PM The US E36 M3 engines actually have very little in common with their European counterparts. In fact, internally BMW Motorsport GMBH calls the US E36 M3's 330is and 332 is. The US engines started out as regular 325 and 328 engines. The European engines were very different, and also had individual throttle bodies for each cylinder, following in the true M tradition. The E30 M3's did have 2.3 liter fours. The evolution versions ended with a 2.5 liter version with 230 some hp. These cars and engines were the basis of BMW Motorsport's Touring car efforts, and in 2.5 liter form made just over 370 hp wihtout any forced induction. matt 06-19-2001, 09:27 PM Damn Lucky Europenas. BMW engines are incredible. 321 HP in an E36 is crazy. That's almost like dropping an E46 M3 engine into an E36 M3. qab5b 06-19-2001, 10:55 PM lucky europeans yes, but also unlucky. imagine paying for the gas on the e46 m3 engine at $4 + a gallon! matt 07-03-2001, 03:58 PM Hopefully gas prices will drop into the sub $2/gallon range again soon in CA and accross the country.
