I believe it is legal, you'd just have to make sure you have some insurance and make sure that there's no fisherman shanties that will be annoyed.

This sounds like a tragic accident waiting to happen...

what could happen? its the middle of a lake with 6 foot deep ice?

were plowing the track clean to the ice and then fairly shallow around the edge, then a little deeper so if u slide out, various amounts of snow slow you down
its a deep solid lake, and i would think a couple of sand bags would be enough to get moving if we were having trouble right?

I seriously doubt that the government would let you arbitrarily pick a place and start racing. You'd need permits from the city, insurance, safety equipment, paperwork up the wazoo...

what if it was one at a time? would that classify as racing? or just reckless driving on private property?
if you own the lake shore is the frozen lake private
property?

In IL if you own all of the shore you do I believe.

if the lake is considered "Navigable" then it is public property, if it not "Navigable" then it is private property.

also, in about 15 seconds, I found an organization that does Ice Racing in your region http://www.angelfire.com/mn/icerace/

Here's another series I found with more clunker style bash em' up style racing on Ice. If you have access to an old big car, this looks like a lot of fun http://www.multigrafx.com/iceracers/
