97 Park Ave power loss when above 60 degrees

I have a 97 Park Avenue which starts to exact really strange when the engine is warm and the outside tempurature is above 60 degrees. When this first happened, I was doing about 70 mph and noticed my speed was dropping - no other indicators of a problem - tried giving it some gas and the engine started to stumble. Slowed down some more and tried to give it gas again same thing engine started to stumble. Had to pull over at this point as could not accelerate however engine was still running. Cut engine off, restarted and Idled fine, but in any gear could not accelarate. Over the next couple of weeks, noticed that if the engine was warm and the outside temp was 60 degrees or above this problem would crop up. The only was to get the car to drive has been to pull over and let the fan run until it stops, this gives me 5 to 15 minutes of drive time before lossing power to accelerate. Other than this issue car is dream to drive.

Just to be clear, when this happens the engine will stumble on accelaratoin and only stall if I do not back of the gas.

What I've done: crank/cam sensors, fuel filter, plugs/wires, checked codes - none.

Any ideas on this will greatly appreciated :)

This is a strange problem! :shakehead
Have you checked the air temp sensor in the air filter box? If it was bad, you should have a code, however if it is out of its socket and close to the engine you could be sensing much hotter temperature than ambient. Also, check the CTS, it may be sending a false signal voltage to the PCM saying the engine is hot, (250+) and the PCM faults the engine to the "limp home mode". :screwy:

okay i went to the local parts store and checked the codes...
it gave me a code 23 mat too low..
oh and the sensor inside the air filter... well.... the plug that goes to the sensor is screwed.. one of the wires for the plug is broke. gonna try to solder it. if the wire was broke before. would that cause the same issue as described above???

I had the exact same problem with our 96 Regal (3100 V6). Even resulted in a minor accident. The car was under warranty when it started and the dealer continued to cover the car even after the warranty ran out because the problem continued. We got a new transmission, computer (PCM?) and Lord knows how many other parts and Buick still could not find a fix. The issue went up to a 2 1/2 year fight with Buick Consumer Relations. They did nothing more but offer a GMPP (ext. warranty) or $1000 off a new Buick. Could not invoke the Lemon Law because the car was a "program vehicle" when we bought it from the dealer. Finally, 3 yrs after the problem started, we traded it off and swore off Buicks. Obviously, we couldn't stay away. I've always hoped and prayed that not having the 3100 engine would be the ticket to never expriencing that again, but now that it appears to have happened with the 3800 engine...yikes! Please let us know how you are able to fix this, in case it happens to anybody else. Thanks.
