how critical is it for the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder to be faceing up in its mounted position ?
it is installed with the nipple faceing down and it seems to me that if there were air in the system- the air would pocket in the slave and never be able to be bleed out - in the down position ?

just had clutch replaced by local independent jeep garage and the pedal engages very close to the floor board ( about 1/2 " - 1" ) . i looked under the car and saw the slave... i wonder if it is mounted upside down or ifit doesnt matter which way it is mounted ?

Your suspicions are correct.
The bleeder screw MUST point upwards or you will never get the air out. It sounds as if your system does have air in it.

Get the mechanic to fix it and re-bleed.

IMO this is a truly fundamental error. The mechanic must either have had a very bad day or simply does not undersand how hydraulics work. Either way, I would hesitate to have him do anything further on the vehicle (other than this repair)

actually i (the amature) was the one who installed it wrong.
when i took it in i told the owner of the jeep shop i had installed it and that i could not get it to work. that was when i thought i needed a neww clutch on the 240,000 (a lot of freeway miles) motor. so i took it in. $1080 later i am left with the thought that i only needed it installed properly from the getgo.
my only hope now is is that i do not get any flack when i take it back and that the problem is graciously corrected with out any additional costs. thanks for your input. paul

Whoops, sorry for my comments there!! I did not mean to pass judgement on your work.

For what its worth, everyone who works on their own vehicles makes errors. I have made some whoppers in the past, much worse than yours. It is very difficult to learn all the details when you do work for the first time with no manual or guidance. You are to be congradualted for doing your own repairs.

It is good that you are observant enough to recognise a problem and correctly analyse the system's function to determine the problem. Many mechaics do not always do this properly.

IMO your mechanic should have spotted this problem before installing a clutch, anyways.

Still, that's a lot of mileage on the old clutch. Its likely a new one would be required eventually, so the $1080 was not really an unnecessary expense.

MR's right on all counts. The bleeder must point up.

I too am a bit surprised it went unnoticed by the mech.

However, I've installed a few things Bass Ackwards as well or have forgotten to reinstall something and didn't realize it until I cleaned my tools and found it on my bench. :(
