question that relates to the transmission

hello to all 4runner freaks.
i have just joined your ranks, after picking up a 94 black exterior/ grey interior auto with 95k on the speedo. i have had great expierences on other forums with BMW's and have looked at a # of 4runner forums and this one appears to be the finest of them all.

I have intermediate motorhead skills and as a result i'm very tuned into and curious about how things work and often i can hear/feel problems as they arrise and i prefere to fix the problem myself if possible.

i really like this truck, even though it has some minor issues, i know that it will serve me well as long as i bring it up to speed. so i've begun changing fluids and filters ect.

I do have a question that relates to the transmission. Here it is....

In H2 when stepping on the gas the tach quickly rise up to around 1800 or so. It feels like its slipping and there is a sound much like a lion roaring and then it shifts into 2nd and then onto 3rd with no slipping at all. Is this just the torque convertor winding up or is it a trans clutches on their way out?

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed and thanks

Welcome to the AF!

It's hard to tell from your description (me not driving it), but it may be normal. I would flush the transmission and see if that made any difference. Sometimes transmissions stick when the fluid gets a little beyond its useful life. It's good enough for the bearings and such, but other parts begin to stick.

If the flush does nothing and it eventually gets any worse at all, bring it in right away. If it stays like that or improves with the flush, then you are probably ok.

i changed the fluid which was looking a little brown and changed the filter which looked fine. the magnets in the pan had colected some very fine metalic dust which i assume is normal.

The trans liked this treatment and shifted smoother but the roaring sound was still there.

I;ll try flushing as soon as i can and report back the results
Thanks for the advise

The "roar" that you are hearing may be the fan clutch.

I agree - That was what I was thinking also. I am not sure how high my 4Runner revs under the circumstances he described.

the fan clutch checks out fine according to Haynes.
No excesive back and forth movement or liquid coming from it and when the engine is warmed up there is some drag on the fan so...

the problem presents most often when i first take off in the morning or when the truck has been sitting for a few hours. it doesn't make the sound in reverse as i back out of my driveway. its when i put it in drive that i hear it.

i just went out and this time dropped it into low gear (1st) and the roar was there til the rpm's reached 2200 or so. it feels like the trans is slipping till it reaches that rpm.

i stopped and started up again and it was gone.

i don't know what is up here and maybe i'll give this thread a rest and have my mechanic check it out.

thx for all the brainstorming
