Anyone here run KYB shocks in their truck?
I have been considering the MonoMax Heavy Duty series, as I have a friend that can get me a good deal on them through his work.
Just wondering if anyone has experience with them..or any of KYB's line

How much is the good deal and remember, the heavy duty will shake your teeth. I know, I have them installed. Great handling, shitty ride!

How cheap?

Holy hell bro, I got 4 heavy duty Gabriel shocks off of ebay brand new for $30 plus $10 shipping.

Your friend is giving you no deal there.

Check ebay, so simple, so cheap, and so easy to find.

Yeah..I was more just dealing with him..and through the retail end of it because I get very..paranoid about Ebay I guess you could say.
For reason..I got burnt on a car deck about a year ago.
For a retail shop..it's a decent price.
I want somthing that will give me better handling..but don't want to sacrafice on the ride to much.

You have to do you research and look at the ebay's seller feedback.

Don't pay $60 per shock for the low end model. Hell, even here at a parts store they are only US$15 per shock.

You are getting no deal whatsoever and those prices for basic budget shocks is apalling.

KYB Mono Max are definetly not Low End. 60 is a bit high though, Autopartsgiant.com has them for 51 and some change, free shipping on orders over 50 bucks.

I'd rate the Gabriel HD shocks about as good as the Monroe ST's, good for a heavy duty aplication, but not worth a darn for these SUV's. The KYB's are more inline with Bilstien shocks, just a tad less expensive (about 17 bucks a shock less). The KYB's won't have the harsh ride of the Gabriel or Monroe shocks, and they'll keep their new ride feel a lot longer.

I have some Monomax shocks on my 2000 and they are great. A beautiful firm highway ride, it's the bumps in the city that are a little harsh. I've had mine for 30K and they are going strong.

I put the KYB Gas-A-Just on my '93 with 193k on the clock. The ride isn't too harsh - matter of fact, it could be a tad bit firmer for my taste. They seem to be holding up fine at 199K- good shocks in my opinion. Next time (if the truck makes it) I might try the Monomax.

I had a 94 Blazer that came with Bilstein’s from the factory. At 104K I wanted new shocks so I bought Monroe’s best Truck Sensa Track shock.

I pulled on of the Bilstein’s off the rear and one of the Monroe’s out of the box. I couldn't believe how firm those Bilstein’s were compared to those new Monroe’s. I put the Bilstein’s back and sent the Monroe’s back to the store.

My other issue with Monroe was a Monte Carlo I had previously. Put new shocks on and the ride and handling was spectacular. About 8K miles later and I was back to the same squishy cornering. I don't think Gabriel’s are any better or worse than Monroe’s and would use either on my heavier full-size older pickups (in fact that is what (Monroe’s) both my older full size have on them and than have been there for 10 years or better, both still having a good firm truck ride).

Gabriel’s aren't available here locally and I'm not going to order them as I would a Bilstein or KYB.

I've got a 93 LT 4x4 4 dr that I believe I will be putting Bilstein’s on. Also got a 95 LS 4x4 4 dr that I'm going to put a set of Mono Max on. Neither came with Bilstein from the factory, the LS have a much cushier ride, needing firmed up more than the 93 IMO. That's why I'm going with Bilstein shocks on the 93 as I feel they give a smoother ride over the bumps and stuff and feel they would match up well with the 93's firmer suspension.

Keep in mind on ride comfort that your tires have a ton of responsibility here. These SUV typically come out with a "P" series tire, i.e. P235/75R15 etc. That is basically a car tire as it is 2 ply side wall and 4 ply tread, a basic cushy tire. If you want a bit firmer ride, switch to an "LT" tire. LT tires are at a minimum 5 ply and most being 6 ply treads. The ride really firms up with these types of tires. But with that comes more road feel. Just going with an LT won't necessarily get you better handling though, as there are plenty of cheap LT tires out there with flimsy side walls. Also, LT tires of the same size as a P tire will be a bit bigger in height and width.

I just installed a set of the KYB MonoMax in my 96 Blazer LS, replacing the original orange Delco shocks that came with the truck. The ride is more stiffer and the truck does not bounce as much. The average price for the KYB's are $53.00, so paying $60.00 is not such a great deal. The rear shocks are very easy to install, but the front are more of a challenge. Good Luck.
