I am in the process of a complete teardown and rebuild of my rear differential. I am doing this with the rear still in the truck. I have found a VERY good step by step procedure for rebuilding the rears on these and many other trucks. This information is a step by step approach to tearing it apart, and rebuilding it. I do not take any credit for this information, but I wish to commend the person or people at fullsizechevy who took the time to compile and create this guide.

Here it is.

No, not changing gears, but I have a bad pinion bearing making noise, so I thought I'll just bebuild it, replace all the bearings (pinion, differential, and outer axle bearings) before winter starts, so I am not stuck on the side of the road in -20 weather....I'll post some pics of it.

Damn, he did a real good job on that "how-to".

I just want to add, he says to use your fingers or a pair of pliers to remove the axle retaining C-clips, I've found it much easier to use a pair of tweezers or a magnet.

For removing the wheel bearings, the slide hammer is a better choice than using a pipe from the other side. If you don't have one, AutoZone has them in their loan-a-tool program.
