new member-93 saturn help pleaserickr_ohio 10-19-2005, 09:38 PM First, thanks for any help in advance. The car is a 93, I believe SL. It's my son's and not real sure of the model. 4 door with sohc throttle body fuel injection, if that helps. Died on him the day before yesterday. By the time I got there, about an hour to pick him up, the car started. I drove it home, but after about a mile it started spitting and sputtering. I kept pumping the gas, and it would surge and I got most of the way home. Died again. Waited about 20 minutes and it restarted. Because he doesn't take real good care of it, the first thing I did was change fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, oil and filter. Car started and ran good. Took it for a test drive. Ran good for about five miles and started doing the same thing. Got it home and checked the error codes. I'm having a little trouble understanding the flashes. After the 3 code 12's I get 3 flashes, a pause, and 4 more. Is that error code 34? I cleaned and tested the coil pack. 8500 ohms resistance. If I clear the error codes, the car will start and run real good for a couple minutes, then start to die. If I pump and fiddle with the gas and keep it running until the service engine soon light comes on, it will run good until I shut it off. Then it won't start again unless I unhook the battery. Does anyone have any idea what to check? Thanks, Rick sierrap615 10-19-2005, 10:43 PM code 34 relates to the map sensor - http://www.differentracing.com/tech_articles/dtc/34.html can you please double check the code? this is not a very common code for saturns(32 is, 35 isn't rare ether) check the connectior to the map sensor. the map sensor will be connented via a vacuum line to the throttle body. shaner123 10-19-2005, 11:11 PM come to think of it i used to own a dodge that had very simular symptions, it just ran like crap, didnt want to start, all sorts of stuff, i got a new map sensor i think was quite cheep, 50 bucks or somthing, and it fied all problems if a little water or somthing gets into that it messes it all up rickr_ohio 10-19-2005, 11:12 PM First, thanks for any help in advance. Does anyone have any idea what to check? Thanks, Rick I reset the system and ran it until I got the error code again like 7 times this evening. Always the same code. 3 flashes, pause, 4 flashes. Would the map sensor cause these symptoms? Thanks, Rick ASE_Tek0312 10-28-2005, 03:22 PM It sure would there buddy. I was workin on a 97 lumina and left the MAP sensor unplugged. The engine had a miss until i plugged it in. Just one question for you though. Did you buy that TBI car so your son wouldnt get any speeding tickets? stevestar99 11-01-2005, 09:29 PM Not sure, but it sounds like a bad fuel pump. Never had a bad one on my SL 1, but other cars that I've had a bad pump on, start up great, run a little while and then crap out. Let it sit, starts great, runs a few minutes and dies. rickr_ohio 11-02-2005, 06:35 AM It was the map sensor. Replaced it and haven't had a problem in over a week. Thanks for the help.
