About Maybach

Mercedes plans top deliver their first Maybachs to their customers in Fall 2002. 1500 cars a year will be built. Interesting was also the comment that 10 to 15% percent of these Maybach buyers have also ordered an SLR, to be built by McLaren in Woking, England, due for release in 2003. These customers wanted both the best in luxury cars and in sportscars....

It's Mercedes new Super Lux Limosine. It's the Pullman Coach of the 21 Century.

The Maybach is Mercedes-Benz' answer to the Rolls-Royce.

Maybach was a luxury car maker before World War II. During the war, there was a bit of consolidation among the German automakers and the company was absorbed into Daimler-Benz. The 2003 Maybach is the first time that the name has been used since World War II.

As far as I know, Maybach will be a distinct brand apart from Mercedes-Benz.

how would it be a distinct brand apart from mercedes-benz if the freakin mercedes symbol is right on the front of the car?!?!?!?!

haven't you seen any of the pictures?

I wasn't aware that it was apart from Mercedes. I know that the name Maybach was one of Carl Benz's friends or something, it now makes sense that thier were a pre-war car maker here's the article;

Daimler-Benz To Build the Mercedes-Benz Maybach
Super-Luxury Limousine Will Also Be Sold in The Canadian Market

Toronto (July 28,1998) -- Following a decision by Daimler-Benz AG to develop and produce the Mercedes-Benz Maybach, Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc. has announced that it will offer the super-luxury limousine beginning around 2003. Other major markets will be in Europe and Asia, including Japan. Shown recently at major auto shows around the world in concept car form, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach will be produced at the Daimler-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart.

Juergen E. Schrempp, Chairman of the Daimler-Benz AG Board of Management, said: “By deciding in favour of building the Mercedes-Benz Maybach, we are once again underlining our claim of representing the absolute “crème-de-la-crème” in all segments. The Mercedes-Benz Maybach will be a masterpiece of automotive technology, setting ultimate standards in luxury features and engineering.”

The Mercedes-Benz Maybach continues the long-standing Daimler-Benz tradition of manufacturing special Mercedes-Benz vehicles for very small market segments. The new car is named after designer Wilhelm Maybach (1846-1929), a long-time colleague of Gottlieb Daimler and one of Germany's most famous automobile designers, who was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame last year for his achievements.

Professor Juergen Hubbert, DBAG board member in charge of passenger cars, said, “Like the Maybach cars of the 1930s, and the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman of the early 1980s, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach will be individually built for each customer in a very small and very exclusive series.”

Professor Hubbert also emphasized that, as with the classic 600 model, the new Maybach will not affect the premium market position of the S-Class line: “The Mercedes-Benz Maybach will complement rather than compete with our existing model ranges, adding an intriguing vehicle, opening an additional market segment and appealing to a special group of high-end customers.”

That car is going to have one crazy engine...something like a twin turbo V12 with about 550bhp if im not mistaken.....they scraped the whole W-16 idea....

Hudson

I don't believe DaimlerChrysler (or Daimler-Benz, for that matter) was ever toying with a W16 engine. I have heard V12 from the beginning, though. And the stories get more and more grand each time it's told. I do believe you're right about the twin-turbo setup.

i think those front lights are kinda ugly..... well they kinda made them look better on the newer one

Thought you might like to catch a glimpse of the new Maybach...as well as an old one. This is an official DaimlerChrysler picture of the 2003 Maybach. As stated earlier, Maybach will become its own brand positioned above Mercedes-Benz.

Hudson

I like it...much better than the original concept.

But I think it looks a bit Korean. Take a look at the upper line Daewoos and Hyundais...the ones not sold here.

Porsche

Ahhh! it does look like a beefed up Avalon, betcha the old one is still worth 10 Times the amount as the new one.

gang$tarr
08-31-2001, 11:45 PM
i think that the older one looked uglier but it looked more out of reach and expensive... the new one doesn't look as exclusive

why do they call it a limo? aren't all the people that are buyin it going to be driving it?

Porsche
09-01-2001, 09:46 AM
i figure it's like RR and Bentley, People will buy it but they may not drive it, Sorry bad example, Bentley IS a driver's car and RR is a Chauffeurs car so it will be a cross-over.

Because there is no "freaking mercedes symbol" right on the front of the car.

I think perhaps some of the earlier prototypes or concepts had the star, but the more recent ones have that odd round tall ornament (still can't figure out what it is).

V12

I like that car very much. It has like a sofa as back seat and all the luxury needed. First Mercedes intended to put a V24 into the Maybach but they changed it into a biturbo V12 because the V24 would have been too loud for a luxury car. Anyway, eventhough V24 sounds good, the 500 hp biturbo V12 should be enough :). I like the official new model much more than the older concept. The only thing that annoys me a little is that Infniti styled front grill, but if you just look at the front lights then its a total Mercedes again. The only thing that makes the front grill look like an Infiniti is that the patterns go diagonal, in the other Merc models the patterns in the front grill go horisontal. Any way, I like that car and it looks very good, at least better than the new BMW Rolls that I've seen in many spypics. The Maybach will surely dominate the luxury car market.

i don't think a V24 is possible.... well maybe it is but totally unpractical... 2 banks of 12 cylinders
maybe it was going to be a W24?? that would make more sense, 4 banks of 6 cylinders, that would still be HUGE! :D

There was never going to be a V24 it was between a bi-turbo V12 and a V16

Morpheus XIII

The prototypes were only equipped with V-12s and bi-turbo V-12s. The production model will have the latter. I suppose they are trying to outdo both Rolls (super-lux) and Bentley (performance aspect) simultaneously. Anyone know how much this thing is going to weigh? Hopefully it will be somewhat lighter than the 5K+ lbs. Bentleys.

gang$tarr
11-13-2001, 04:44 PM
i doubt it'll be lighter than bentleys, the thing is huge, it's big if not bigger than the bentleys, plus it has all those crazy features.

i think i'm thinkin of something else, but it might have marble floors.... i doubt it though

Morpheus XIII

Well, I never received the photo of the V24 engine from Mr. V12, but I found a conceptual sketch of one after some heavy browsing. Interestingly, the various eurpoean sites had differing numbers for the V24, including 12 liters or 15 liters, possible supercharger, and 1000 hp. The idea basically called for 2 Mercedes V12 engines mated at the crank, but a forced induction V12 proved to be enough power for a primarily chauffeured limousine.

Hey Jay, if you're still checking back to this thread, I found a larger shot of the production Maybach posted earlier, which clearly shows the emblem, which seems to be brought back to life from early Maybach vehicles.
