Morality question of the day

Q: If you know the person behind you is trying to keep pace with you on public road and you willingly lead a healthy pace; furthermore you know that the handling capabilities of your vehicle are far greater than those of the pacing auto, are you responsible in anyway if you start banging out turns in such a way that results in the pursuit vehicle leaving the roadway?

A: _________________________

Debate away.

Alternate question: What are people in "average" cars thinking when they insist on trying to follow an MR2 with hooked up suspension and an experience driver through curves? :grinno:

No. And you both can be called dumbasses for doing so. Although you're still not as dumb as he is, obviously. :p

One of the foremost things you do, when you first acquire a car, is to "get to know it". Meaning, know it's limits, at least to 8/10ths, so that if an emergency situation occurs that needs the cars limits, you know how far to take it. It is also your responsibility to not take the car - and yourself - beyond these limits.

A good example is me, and my "porky" daily-driver, which is a Mitsubishi Diamante.

If I feel "frisky" in the my morning commute, I sometimes go full-acceleration into the sweeping left turn, going into the ramp, leading into the freeway I commute on. This is from a stop, never when I am already moving, so I know that even at full acceleration, my car will only be at 50-60mph tops, once it hits the sharpest part of the turn. I only do this if I have the left lane, and my right lane is clear, as at that speed, my car actually drifts into the right lane. I actually beat an S2000 this way, as the driver did not think I will dive into that corner that aggresively.

If the S2000 driver did decide to drive at 8/10ths like I was, I wouldn't even try, as I know my car's limits will not come to approaching that of the "competition".

If the lead car never broke a law, why are they a dumbass?

The chase car should know their limits. Its not the lead car's fault they mess up because they and/or the car just cant "handle" it

Well it was his choice, not yours...he should have known the limits of his car and what it can/cannot do.

Even in theory if the lead was speeding being reckless etc.

It takes 2 to tango. The lead car did nothing to throw him off like mash brakes, block line etc.

If he was trying to keep up that was his mistake.

its the fault of the dumbass chasing. . .

did this happen to you?

Not your fault if he goes flying off the road. And legally, if the lead car didn't break any laws, just maintained the speed limit with superior handling and grip... you're in the clear.

The driver is resposible for their car, not the guy infront of them, or behing them.

Years ago it happend to me three times ... once with a box truck?! :grinno: There was no damage in those cases. Two of the drivers lost it on exit ramps and ended up in the grass. The third driver was following me into a sharp entrance to a shopping center and spun into the lot :D

This was on my mind because it almost happened twice this weekend with two different cars, but they both managed to stay on the road ... although I have never seen a car (10-year old cavalier) lean that much before :D

I was in my '85 MR2 that has full suspension and is 100% brand new "underneath" (all suspension components ... everything).
The car looks like hell but handles amazingly.

... actually is happend a 4th time as well.

A friend of mine was following me in a Galant and I was in Jekyl. It was drizzling out and I shot around a traffic circle. He made it 3/4 of the way around and could not complete the turn and went up and over a curb (no damage).

It would be the second drivers fault. Nobody was forcing him to keep up with the lead car.

i wish i had a car that handled like it was on rails, man i would toss so many people off the road like that. LOL i know, im sick!

Judging by your "alternate question" you already know the answer most of us will give...

"What are people thinking..." when they outdrive the limits of their car or the limits of their ability? It's their own fault.

Now if you would have been the chase car egging on the car in front of you, I would have a different perspective on this.
