Depending on what kind of money you would like to spend, there are several choices. There's the cheap eighty to a hundred dollar code pullers at the parts stores. They will work for most diesel applications. The problem is, though that they cannot recover codes from your IDM and with the number of injector harness issues we've seen with the 7.3, that is a definate drawback. If you want to spend some money and get a real quality tool, there's the Genisus II from OTC and the NGS from OTC. The Genisus will do all makes and models and has excellent datalogger capabilities, I prefer them to the Snap-Ons any day. The NGS, though was designed in cooperation with FMC to work on their vehicles. You can get cards programmed at any dealer service center usually and they will work with all Ford vehicles, you can also get cards for other make/models. These will both set you back 2-3k but if you are a serious tech, they are well worth it.

The new Snap On scannners are 100% JUNK.All I have been hearing nothing but problems with them and have to be sent in for repair. The one that is ahead of everyone is Vetronix. The Vetronix is best one and the top of the line and is $6,000 dollars and puts the Snap On scanners to shame.I use one of them the advantage,no cables to connect to the battery or in the cigeratte lighter and is battery powered. It is a whole lot easier to use.If you have a computer headache, you can call a rep goes around in your area and will help you out.Stay away from OTC,made by SPX from greedy people that will screw anyone.

this is OBD 1 with 16 pin connector

The 16 pin under-dash diagnostic connectors are ALL OBD-II, and EVERY vehicle sold in the USA from 1996 on has the same connector, some as ealry as 1994.

The obd-2.com stuff will work, I have it and use it on 1996 Ford E-350 diesel (Powerstroke) vans.
