I went out to start my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire and found that I can put the key in the ignition but cannot turn the key...the ignition is locked. Does anyone know what I can do?

WD-40 on your key and stick in in a few times. Let it sit. Repeat a few times. Try again.

Just make sure that graphite other other "powder" type lubricant wasn't used before. If it was, you will just make the situation worse.

Have you tried other keys, preferably lesser used keys, first? Over time, the primary key can wear down so that the peaks and valleys aren't quite where they should be. For the same reason, it's also possible that the pins in side the cylinder have worn down as well.

Well I tried the WD40 and it didn't work, but was a great suggestion, thanks! I will try another key and will talk to my husband about the pins. Thanks for that suggestion too!
