i have a 94 jgcl 5.2 with 140k miles on it. it looks to have the original spark plug wires on it. the truck shutters most of the time and worse when its damp or raining out. the dist. cap is buried behind the engine and amechanic wants from 200 toaround 250 dollars for a tune up. has anyone tackled this job at home and is the cap and rotor really that hard to get to? or should i just send it out and not worry about takeing cap and rotor off and not being able to get it back on. if it isn't that hard is there any special tools or size of tool i should get? thanks for any info.

replacing your cap is a pain to get to, but in the long run, if your patient and want to save money, you can do it easily in about an hour. You'll need a phillips head screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the distributor cap in place. When you remove the wires, make sure you don't cross wires up or you'll have a bad miss; do that by removing each wire off one at a time, making sure it goes to the appropriate cylinder. As far as removing the spark plugs, you'll need a 3/8 ratchet, an extension and a 5/8" spark plug socket as well as a spark plug gapper. The driver's side bank is not that hard to fix, the passenger side is a little bit trickier, requiring you to remove the air snorkel and contorting your hand to get in there and change out those plugs. If you're like me, tight on cash and don't trust anyone else to fix my car, do it yourself.
