No 3rd or 4th on my 98 Windstar

While driving about 30-35 mph I felt a slight jerk and lost my 3rd and 4th gear. Only able to drive in 2nd gear 20-23 mph so I don't burn my RPMs. Had no choice to drive it home from Mall. I thought it was my Tranny, but it was fine and NO burnt smell all fluids were fine. Grrrr! Saw on another board, it could be GEARBOX?

Any info would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks Pynappl

I forgot to mention that my OD light was blinking until I turned her off. Also,
that her idle in park was jumpy. Just under 1k RPM. Fluctuating even when I came to a stop...like ugh, ugh, ugh...kinda.

Had a tune up in July 05 or late June 05...oops forgot mileage???? and CEL is on.

Sorry

Sorry to inform you that your tranny just gave up the ghost! Even if it was a "gear box" your tranny would still be toast! I would be willing to bet you're around 100,000 miles on this thing. Right?

I just had the same thing happen to my 97 LeSabre! No gears past 2nd and no reverse. I put in a used one I got from the bone yard ($430.00)(101,000 miles on it). It took me roughly a week to do the job. No, this wasn't the only thing I was doing. I am happy with the outcome. I figured I saved about 600.00 to 800.00 doing the job myself.

Dan

what about the range selector switch on the trannies, It may be worth a shot replacing it, not too expensive, I would want a new one anyway if tranny was being re-built.

Thank you Florida.
I am gonna go get the book. Not sure if I will attempt or put in SHOP. Last time I put her in (Mc Leas) for a tune up I think they screwed her up. I even had them flush my Tranny in Late June early July 05. I will definitely check Pick and Pull to see if they have any Trannys etc.

However, If I should go with shop option, is there anything else I should check before putting her in so they don't try and tell me I need this and that etc.?

Thanks again everyone.

I hope your tranny isn't badly damaged ... perhaps something electrical as suggested.

I can't help but wonder how many tranny "flushings" have help to destroy the transmission it's suppose to help.

I'm a personal advocate of following the "drain and refill" procedure as outlined in the Haynes repair manual ... a proven reliable "authority" on maintenance.
